The UNLV Rebels have earned a football training facility that embodies the grit, sweat, and teamwork they put into their organization. The facility is part of an effort to usher in a new era of athletic success for the team and revitalize the football program, based on the philosophy that successful training incorporates team relationship development, academic achievement, and nutrition, as well as physical conditioning. The facility is situated on the north end of their current practice area inside Rebel Park and is a home where Rebels will train, study, eat, learn and grow as people.
The complex celebrates teamwork, focusing on the total wellness of student-athletes with a state-of-the-art headquarters designed to prepare for success on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Features include an academic center, team dining hall with full kitchen, nutrition bar, academic tutoring room, sports medicine center, state-of-the-art hydrotherapy, team auditorium, position meeting rooms, team lounge, and barber shop, in addition to the 9,000 square foot weight-lifting area, modern locker room, and coaches offices with balconies overlooking the practice field.
The building itself is designed around the existing practice fields, and interior spaces are oriented to ensure this nexus of performance is always at the forefront. Every important space has soaring views of the field to celebrate why this building exists: to provide support to a team who lays it all out on that field every day. The state-of-the-art weight room serves as the heart of the building and is centered directly on the practice fields, reinforcing that connection. The weight room is open to the internal building circulation, with an open nutrition bar and glass fronted trainer offices. Team lounge, locker room, sports medicine, hydrotherapy, and equipment rooms are all adjacent to this hub.
The second level is focused on all around success of the athletes, with team rooms, tutor rooms, a team dining area serving three meals a day, hall of fame, and auditorium all comprising one wing, ensuring nutrition, academic success, and teamwork are interconnected and equally valued. Coaches offices and recruiting are located to ensure they all have balconies overlooking the practice fields on one side and the weight room on the other, with the head coach also having a view of the Vegas strip.
Innovative use of materials to achieve desired aesthetics; interior finishes, detailing and color schemes used; use of natural and artificial lighting; building materials used.
While in the design phase, the UNLV football team went viral and was featured on ESPN for a phone video of a training session in their weight room which captured the entire team cheering on a player as he lifted. This comradery and energy inspired the interior design of the space, which attempts to capture, reflect and amplify the vibrancy, energy, and family-like bonds of the team, as evidenced in the soaring heights and openness of the teams new weight room, a lounge within the locker room, and 72 round family style tables in the team dining room.
Viva Las Vegas
Being close to the Vegas strip, the building interior pays homage to its local roots while melding with UNLV’s modern athletic aesthetic. Modified Welcome to Las Vegas signs, rich leathers, gold glass, and Elvis wallpaper combine with state-of-the-art facilities, clean lines, and expansive glass to achieve this union. The interior is high contrast, bold, and bright in high energy spaces, and becomes richer and more subdued in slower areas, with gold, classic brown leather, and dimmer accent lighting. The rat-pack inspired team lounge with Elvis wallpaper and barber shop with black and gold mustache pattern wallpaper provide a humorous touch.
