Day Two Recap 2019 Men's Tennis National Championship

MOBILE, Ala. — The top eight seeds in the 2019 NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship will compete in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

No. 8 Keiser (Fla.) 5, No. 9 William Woods (Mo.) 2

  • The Seahawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit following doubles play to win four singles matches.
  • Senior Arthur Bonnaud secured two points for KU, helping secure the lone doubles point for the Seahawks at line three, and winning at line four singles.
  • Keiser will now face Georgia Gwinnett in a rematch of last year’s championship match.

No. 5 William Carey (Miss.) 5, No. 12 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 2

  • The Crusaders won at the top two doubles spots, with Lindsey Wilson coming away with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
  • The middle of the lineup wrapped up the match for WCU, getting wins at Nos. 4, No. 2, and No. 3 to finish the day.
  • William Carey will face fourth-seeded Point (Ga.) in the quarterfinal round.

No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett 5, No. 17 Arizona Christian 0

  • A quick start in doubles play powered the top-seeded Grizzlies to victory.
  • Georgia Gwinnett will face eighth-seeded Keiser in the quarterfinal.

No. 4 Point (Ga.) 5, No. 20 Northwestern Ohio 0

  • This is Point’s first appearance and win in the national championship.
  • The Skyhawks won all three doubles matches, led by seventh-ranked Christian Garay and Julien Pereira’s 8-4 win over 10th-ranked Artur Culicovschi and Marcos Salazar.
  • Garay, ranked seventh in singles, came away with a shutout win at No. 1 singles to put Point up 4-0.
  • Point will face fifth-seeded William Carey (Miss.) in the quarterfinal.

No. 3 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) 5, No. 14 Mobile (Ala.) 2

  • The Wolves won two of the three doubles matches to take the lead into singles play.
  • Mobile’s doubles point came at the top spot where the third-ranked tandem of Boris Klingebiel and Mark Simons defeated the top ranked pair of Niccolo Rossi and Nicola Wehrle, 8-6.
  • Fifth-ranked Agustin Gascia scored the first singles point for CSU and was followed by Rossi and Nicoloas Palacio.
  • Cardinal Stritch will face sixth-seeded Middle Georgia State in the quarterfinal round.

No. 6 Middle Georgia State 5, No. 11 Tennessee Wesleyan 0

  • Middle Georgia State got off to a 3-0 start, not yielding more than four games in any of the matches.
  • The No. 24-ranked doubles team of Alejandro Prada and Jimmy Merah knocked off 21st-ranked Calus Blomqyist and Ryan Lee, 8-2 at the top spot.
  • Merah picked up the first singles point for the Knights and was followed by Octavio Tamola at line four.
  • The Knights will face No. 3-seeded Cardinal Stritch on Thursday.

No. 7 Xavier (La.) 5, No. 10 Union (Ky.) 0

  • This is Xavier’s 16th win in the national championship in their 11th appearance, and are heading to the quarters for the eighth consecutive year.
  • Shaikh Abdullah scored points at No. 1 doubles, where he and Santiago Perez are ranked sixth nationally, and at No. 3 singles, defeating 42nd ranked Simon Campus 6-1, 6-4.
  • Perez won his 17th consecutive match, winning 6-2, 6-3 over 29th-rnaked Lois Castellon. Perez is the No. 2-ranked singles player in the NAIA.
  • Xavier will face second-seeded Reinhardt (Ga.), which the Gold Rush defeated 5-4 on March 29th in New Orleans.

No. 2 Reinhardt 5, No. 15 Cumberland 1

  • Reinhardt improved to 5-4 all-time in the tournament in this their fifth appearance.
  • The Eagles held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, getting an 8-3 win at Line 1 from Martin Mendoza and Sam Alexander and Line 2 from Myrohn Miranda and Bruno Juarez.
  • Mendoza, ranked 12th nationally in singles play, came away with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Reinhardt also won at lines four and five singles.
  • The Eagles will face seventh-seeded Xavier (La.) in the quarterfinal round.
