How it Works:

A pumped storage reservoir is an efficient way of creating electrical power when needed. It uses gravity to release water stored at the top in reservoir to power a turbine to create energy in a few seconds. When power is in low demand, the water that is now at the bottom reservoir gets pumped back to the top reservoir.

Advantages:

The creation of a pumped storage reservoir leaves very little impact on the surrounding area and leaves behind very little pollution on the land. It is also a quick way to create energy in the event of an emergence or other problem.

Disadvantages:

The cost of creating energy by using pumped storage reserves is very expensive because the area has to be leveled to place the pumps underground which is not an easy task. Other than the expense, carrying the water up the mountain is time consuming and controlling the waters flow also takes up time and can only be done at specific times.

Renewable or nonrenewable:

This question does not apply to this form of energy plant as a pumped storage plant is a means to store not create energy.

Facts:

1. There is a total of 40 pumped storage plants in the US alone and alone makes more than 22 gigawatts (GW).

2. In the year 2011, pumped storage plants produced 23 billion kilowatts hours (kWh) of electricity.

3. The fastest response time of any pumped storage plant is in Dinorwig, Wales. It can produce 1,320 Megawatts of power in just 12 seconds.

4. In just 2011 pumped storages used 29 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, resulting in a loss of of 6 billion kilowatt hours of power.

5. In South California, Eagle Crest Energy in developing the Eagle Mountain pumped storage to maintain a reliable source of power.

6. Pumped storage plants are the most reliable method to store energy in use today.

7. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) authorized for 24 pumped storage plants to be created, most of all of these plants were authorized more than 30 years ago.
