Impact Report 2015 - 2016

TOGETHER, WE ARE MAKING THE OPPORTUNITY OF EDUCATION AVAILABLE TO ALL

Dear Friend,

Last year, the Miami Dade College Foundation distributed $13,865,109 to benefit the students and programs of Miami Dade College. This was only possible because of the generosity of our donors. If you have made a gift in the past, we thank you.

The Foundation takes our role as steward of your contributions very seriously. Our Investment Committee comprises investment professionals to ensure that the underlying assets of the Foundation are managed wisely. And, each year, Kaufman Rossin audits our funds.

Whether your passion is for student scholarships, arts and culture, entrepreneurship, workforce training, health care or anything else that would elevate our Miami community, we invite you to contribute to MDC Foundation. Miami Dade College has a long history of responding to the needs of our business community with certificate and degree programs designed to create the workforce of tomorrow. Beyond our educational offerings, the College provides the Miami community access to world-class cultural programming.

While we are proud of our progress, there is more work to do. More than 79 percent of full-time, first-time students at the College require financial assistance to pursue their studies, and state funding has been declining over the last ten years. Given this environment, private contributions are essential to the College. Your support can make access to quality educational opportunities at Miami Dade College available to all, forever influencing the career trajectory of our students and improving the economic outlook for their families. Together, we will change lives in Miami and beyond, via the opportunity of education.

Sincerely,

Julie Grimes, Board Chair
Mark Cole, Executive Director
Ivan Delgado is the recipient of the Alienware Scholarship, which is helping him pursue a degree at MDC’s Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC). He says he’s confident MDC is preparing him for the competitive industry.

INVEST IN STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are essential to any academic institution. This is especially true at Miami Dade College, where 66 percent of students are considered low income and 45 percent live below the federal poverty level for their household size. As a result, many work to support families and attend school part-time to juggle their myriad responsibilities.

Scholarships awarded to MDC students have an incomparable impact on the recipient and a multiplier effect on their families and communities. With greater funding, Miami Dade College Foundation can increase the availability of scholarships making more educational dreams possible.

"TALENT IS UNIVERSAL, OPPORTUNITY IS NOT."

- Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, Miami Dade College President

INVEST IN STUDENT ACCESS AND SUCCESS

MDC Foundation raises essential dollars to fund student access and success. We work hard to ensure that the opportunity of education is available to all who seek it, and that those who study here are successful in their academic and life pursuits. MDC ensures student success with a suite of programs and services to support students from pre-college advisement through orientation, to the attainment of a degree or credential leading to a middle-class job and beyond.

Miami Dade College awards more associate degrees to Hispanics and African Americans than any other institution in the country.

"MDC is about second chances and hidden gems. The college gave me hope to achieve big dreams."

- Benita Okeke, student

INVEST IN FULL-TIME FACULTY

Highly credentialed and committed faculty members are crucial to Miami Dade College’s delivery of quality education, and several have been named U.S. Professor of the Year. Students and alumni consistently credit their full-time professors as catalysts to their successes, both in the classroom and beyond. Full-time faculty members offer accessibility and counsel essential to the success of our graduates. With increased funding, the Foundation can make further investments in full-time faculty, making these transformative faculty-student connections possible.

Professor Juan M. Morata takes pride in mentoring his students and providing them with an interactive hands-on learning experience. His students are going on to become research scientists, and a few have pursued patents for their work. In 2011, Morata was honored as a Philip Morris Endowed Teaching Chair.
"If it weren't for the mentoring and support of my MDC professors, I would not be where I am today. I was at a fork in the road and they steered me in the right direction."

- Lilliam Guerrero, student

INVEST IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Innovation based on workforce and market needs is a hallmark of Miami Dade College, and MDC Foundation raises essential dollars to fund a host of entrepreneurial learning experiences for our students and the community. The Idea Center at MDC is an industry-agnostic ecosystem of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, offering classroom education, professional development opportunities and experiential learning programs to MDC students and the community at large.

"I OWE MY SUCCESS IN MY EARLY CAREER TO MDC."

– Manny Medina, Founder and CEO of Medina Capital, Founder of eMerge

The Idea Center is introducing MDC students like Arturo Gomez Real to the vast world of computer programming. Thanks to MDC, students are being prepared for 21st century careers. Arturo is now a Computer Science Fellow at Harvard University.

INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE

From dental care to physical therapy and nursing, Miami Dade College is preparing future clinicians to be successful in the workforce. The School of Health Sciences at MDC’s Medical Campus is home to state-of-the-art facilities and more than two dozen degree programs and training certificates that put our students on the fast track to an in-demand career. Additional investments in scholarships, programs and technology will enhance health sciences education at MDC, with spillover effects into our community.

SUPPORTING THE NURSES OF TODAY AND TOMORROW

Dr. Juli Daniels is the RN-BSN Department Chair at the MDC Benjamín León School of Nursing. She thanks mentor and philanthropist Joan Kennedy Stout for supporting her start in nursing as a 1999 recipient of the Joan K. Stout Scholarship. Today, Dr. Daniels has the privilege of mentoring students who also benefited from Joan’s generous support.

INVEST IN ARTS AND CULTURE EDUCATION AND EVENTS

One of Miami Dade College’s greatest gifts to the community is a diverse and internationally acclaimed portfolio of arts, literary and cultural programming. Our students learn to see each other and the world through the prism of the arts, and in doing so, are enriched.

Our abundant arts and culture offerings include the Miami Film Festival, Miami Book Fair, MDC Live Arts, Museum of Art + Design, New World School of the Arts, and more. MDC Foundation raises essential dollars to fund education and programming that inspires learning, creativity and innovation in our students and our community.
