Club donates to CREST school Julie Gorham / Citrus Chronicle

The IR-RU Family Social Club of Inverness presented a $4,600 check to the CREST School in Lecanto on Wednesday.

For the second year in a row, the club raised funds through its Autism Awareness Benefit, with nine bands donating time and talent, provided courtesy of Steve Champagne of Shining Star Productions.

“Last year we donated $4,500 to the school to help them purchase a supplemental tool to help with daily curriculum,” Jeffries said. “We are happy to raise more than last year to help this wonderful school in our community.”

The funds are going toward the purchase of a communication device to use on iPads that give nonverbal students a voice using images and sound, while also buying a couple of adaptive bicycles, costing about $1,500 each. CREST students greeted IR-RU members with a huge thank-you by presenting them with a tearful tribute video and thank-you card.
