About the author...

Veronica Roth, an American novelist, was born on August 19th, 1988 in New York City. She was raised in Barrington, Illinois by her mother; Barbara Ross. Roth was the youngest of the three children. Her mother was divorced and remarried. Veronica graduated from Barrington High school and went onto college at Carleton University, then transferred to Northwestern University for their creative writing program. She has written many successful novels.

About the book...

Divergent was published on April 25th, 2011. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago. The survivors are separated into five factions based on their dispositions. Abnegation for the selfless and kind, Dauntless for the brave, Candor for the honest, Amity for the peaceful, and Erudite for the intelligent. Every year, anyone who is sixteen takes a test to be placed in the faction that best suits them. But those who do not fit, become factionless. The factions must decide what to do when the Erudite leader plans an attack on Abnegation using the drugged Dauntless as soldiers.

About the main character...

Beatrice Prior, who later changes her name to Tris, was born into Abnegation, but she feels out of place in her family and faction. She is nervous to learn about which faction she really belongs to. She takes her aptitude test and finds out her results are inconclusive, she is divergent. But on choosing day she chooses to become Dauntless.

What I liked...

I liked the excitement of reading this story because every page it was like something new and exciting was happening. I also liked how they were tested and placed into their own factions

What I didn't like...

There wasn't much that I didn't like.

Theme...

The theme of this story is identity because throughout the story Tris is learning about who she really is and what she believes in.
