Cabra Matters Term 3 Week 2 2019

Principal's Report

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

During the past two weeks, we have been celebrating the amazing culture and history of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia.

You will know that these people arrived in Australia from today’s Asian continent about 60,000 years ago. They are the longest continuous living human cultural group in the history of our planet.

We live on their land which was originally occupied by the Cabrogal Clan until they were forced out or died from diseases not long after the arrival of Europeans about 230 years ago.

The name of the clan comes from the worm-like shellfish which lives in and eats the dead wood found in the local creeks and streams. This worm was called “cabro” and was an important and tasty part of the local people’s diet. The suburb name of Cabramatta means “the place of the cabro in running water”.

As part of our school’s celebration of indigenous culture the students adopted an Aboriginal name, made a pendant from plaited wool and designed and painted stones using Aboriginal symbols. The painted stones will be stored in the memorial Garden next to Year 4. Yesterday, the students experienced the playing of traditional Aboriginal games, heard about Dreamtime stories and watched a performance of dancing by the Maleurindi Clan.

I hope that your child told you about our activities and learnt a little more about the first Australians.

We will be celebrating Education Week in week 5 with parents and carers invited to visit classrooms and enjoy morning tea in the hall. Details for the day will come in the next newsletter.

This Tuesday, August 6, all parents and carers are invited to attend our Week 3 P and C meeting. This is a great opportunity to hear about what is happening at school, meet other parents and carers and plan activities to support our children and staff. A delicious Morning Tea will be provided.

On Tuesday, August 13, from 9.00 am – 10.00 am, a special presentation will be made to help parents and carers understand what we do to help our students learn Maths skills and ideas to use with the students at home. This session will be led by Mrs Jara, our K-2 Maths expert, and refreshments will be provided.

In Week 5, we will be celebrating Book Week in our usual positive fashion with Author and Illustrator Talks, Book Sale and Character Parade. There will be more information provided over the next few weeks.

Kindest regards,

Tjiwi (Glen Stelzer)

Book Week 2019

Book Week will be in Week 5, and we are very lucky this year we have two author's coming to speak to the students and also an illustrator to give a talk to the students.

On Friday August 23rd, we are having a book character parade. Parents and community members are invited to come and enjoy our whole school parade of great literary figures. The parade will begin about 9:10am after attendance has been taken. This means that students need to come to school dressed in their book character costume.
