Whitkirk News! 26th November 2021

A message from Mr. Dawson

This week, we have had the Red Kite Director of Primary, Amanda Thornton-Jones, in school to look at mathematics. She was pleased with our children’s learning behaviours and the consistency that we have implemented across the school. The children were really enthusiastic about their mathematics and were happy to talk about their learning.

We have really been enjoying the ‘Secret Reader’ in Reception and KS1. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered so far and from your feedback, you’ve loved it too. If you have not had the opportunity to take part yet and would like to, please get in touch. If you have already read, you can always put your name down again!

I would like to say a huge well done to our Y4 pupils, who took part in the RKLT football competition on Tuesday. We took two teams with us and finished first and second – scoring some fantastic goals. Thank you to all of our parents who supported the children with transport and cheered them on.

We now have an amazingly decorated Christmas tree in the large hall. Thank you to the PTA who came in yesterday to trim it and thank you to everyone who donated a bauble. You will all get a chance to view it at the Whitkirk Christmas Fair tomorrow. I hope to see you there!

Christmas Fair

Due to high winds forecast for Saturday we have decided to move our market indoors. So instead, come and take a stroll down our cosy market streets and say hi to the big guy! We can't wait to see you there!

Christmas Events

Attendance

Well done to Y4CO, who are our attendance champions this week with 97.7% attendance. They are followed by Y2KDo and Y6JC, who are in joint second place with 96.1%. Well done to everybody who has attended school every day this week!

Let's see what our classes have been up to this week:

Reception:

This week in Reception, we have started our nativity rehearsals. The children have started learning the songs, their lines, and learning all about the Christian story of Christmas. Alongside this, children have discussed different celebrations around the world and how their family and friends may celebrate throughout the year. In maths this week, the children have been finding one more and one less and using the language of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ to compare amounts. Mr. Dawson was very proud of our mathematical language when he joined us for maths on Tuesday!

In Read Write Inc, the children have worked incredibly hard to recall all Set 1 Speed Sounds. Children are now practising ‘Fred Talk’ to read words and using ‘Fred Fingers’ to write words. It is wonderful to now see the children independently reading and writing within areas of provision in the classroom!

Lastly, we would also like to say a huge thank you to all the adults who have volunteered for our Secret Reader initiative. The children are incredibly excited for their next visitor in class!

KS1:

Our Year 1 pupils have had another superb week. In maths, we have been learning all about time. We have been thinking about what we do in the morning, afternoon and evening, and then we even learned to tell the time to o’clock and half past. The children have done fantastically well with this and all Year 1 adults are very impressed.

Talk for Writing has been very exciting this week…because Santa has been! Santa came to our classrooms and left us our classroom post boxes with a present inside...a book and a postcard from the Jolly Christmas Postman. We have been busy learning the actions and have already begun writing a postcard back to him to thank him for all his hard work. Well done Year 1!

Our History theme “How are our lives different to our grandparents?” has been very exciting, but this week has topped it off! We have been learning what music our grandparents listened to and we enjoyed singing and rehearsing “Yellow Submarine” by the Beatles.

What a fun-packed week we have had yet again in Year 2! In maths, we have been learning to tell and write the time using quarter past, half past, quarter to, and o'clock. In English, we read 'The Crayons' Christmas' and then learnt a new text all about Duncan's Christmas preparations. We will be using this as inspiration to write our own recounts next week. In RE, we have completed some fabulous acrostic poems; considering what makes a good friend and what qualities they need to have. We completed a materials investigation in science; looking at the most suitable fabric to use to make children's dungarees. This week, we have done a very exciting job; learning our songs for our nativity. There are some really catchy songs that we're sure you will be hearing at home soon!

LKS2:

We have had another fantastic week in Year 3! We started our new class text ‘The Christmasaurus’; we are absolutely loving reading every page and can’t wait to find out what happens in the rest of the book! As scientists, we have been using magnets to find magnetic and non-magnetic materials, it was great to see everyone working collaboratively to sort the materials. There’s no excuse for any of the Year 3s to be late, as we have become experts this week on telling the time. Well done Year 3 for another great week!

This week, Year 4 have been newspaper reporters. They are preparing themselves to report on a spectacular event - an Ancient Roman Chariot Race! The children have become very knowledgeable about chariot racing, learning some interesting facts about what used to take place in the races. We can't wait to read their newspaper reports next week! In maths, the children have become experts in finding the area and perimeter of shapes. We have investigated the most efficient way to find area and looked at the relationship between both perimeter and area. Also, a special mention to our Year 4 football team who represented Whitkirk Primary School at a tournament this week. We are incredibly proud of your amazing attitudes throughout the games - you are Whitkirk role models! A super week Year 4, well done!

UKS2:

Our Year 5 pupils have blown us away this week with their brilliant writing in preparation for our character description on the vile Grendel from our class text. They have created some amazing sentences, so we can’t wait to see their descriptions next week. In maths, the children have worked really hard on area and perimeter, having a good go at some challenges too. In science, we have tested the properties of a range of metals, and in RE, we have been looking at forgiveness, which we had a great discussion on.

Year 6 are no longer Y6 pupils, but young journalists. We have become fully immersed in our new writing, researching the key events and impact of the blitz at the time (even with newspapers from WW2!). Digging a little deeper, we then looked at the style and features of these newspapers, gathering key sophisticated vocabulary ready to write our own reports!

As scientists, we have been investigating how our pulse rate changes after exercise. Using our maths skills to find the bpm and then the average bpm (using the mean), we analysed key trends!

Stars of the Week:

Have a fantastic weekend! We hope to see lots of you at the Christmas Fair tomorrow!
