A variety of packages by hannah - year 8

“Oh, there’s the smart kid who goes to the special school.”

But who said anything about giftedness being just about your intellect?

Giftedness comes in a variety of little packages. There’s the kid that still doubts themselves after getting 100% on every assignment and the kid that can can play any sport after a ‘nerve-wracking’ twenty minutes. Or the person who can be given a topic and go off and make a gorgeous, flowing dress.

As many a gifted person can tell you, it’s not about how smart you are. It’s more about how we learn and how we retain information. How we focus, or how passionate we are about learning something new.

As an old teacher of mine told me:

Talent plus work, gets you far. But giftedness minus work, gets you nowhere.

From that I learnt that giftedness can only put you at the starting line and no matter the gift, only hard work will get me anywhere.

Physical and creative capabilities should be included in people’s understanding of giftedness. Remember to nurture the gifts your kids and friends have, or they will fall off the curve.
