Welcome to the Winter 2020 Newsletter! As we continue to navigate through this challenging time, the safety of our customers, staff and community is our top priority. We will continue to follow the guidelines from the City of San Antonio, State of Texas and the CDC. We encourage everyone to wear a mask, practice social distancing, be mindful of all the surfaces you come in contact with, and frequently wash your hands. Should you begin to have any sign of COVID-19 symptoms, we highly encourage you to call the Pro Shop to cancel your tee time. Thank you to our customers for your patience and continued support.

ON THE GREEN WITH BRUCE

The last few months have been busy here at the golf course and we are happy for that. The greens were overseeded again this year on October 12 with Poa trivialis. The overseeding has established itself well, but has been competing with the underlying Tifdwarf bermudagrass up until the first week in December when we hit a low of 24 degrees. That’s actually a good thing because now the overseeding has the upper hand and we can begin mowing it lower and creating faster putting speeds. Some of the tees were overseeded with Perennial ryegrass to give the player a better surface to hit from. We reseed and sand the divots on those tees on a consistent basis, so they are continually healing and growing. Speaking of divots, the practice tee was overseeded as well. You can help the staff out by taking divots in a linear pattern, it will allow the turf to heal much more quickly and give everyone more turf to hit from.

Something else I need to mention, because it comes up every year when we have a hard freeze or frost. Play will be delayed if there is frost on the overseeded greens and tees. Any foot traffic or mower traffic will crush and rupture the frozen cells in the leaf blade of the plant and kill it. We certainly don’t want this to happen. If there is a frost delay, we ask for your patience, and you will tee off as soon as it is safe.

Thank you all for your support of The Quarry Golf Course and we look forward to seeing you out here soon.

FUN FACTS

Cement production was one of San Antonio's oldest and biggest industries, playing a significant role in the city's 20th century growth. In 1908, Cementville opened its new plant a few miles north on 500 acres outside the original city limits. Because of its remote location, Alamo Cement built 90 cottages for workers and their families providing a close knit labor community. During its 70 years of occupation, Cementville had a community pool, baseball diamond, auditorium and a 35-piece band that played classical and patriotic music. There was a clinic, and eventually a four-room schoolhouse run by the Alamo Heights School district. The cement was used in many buildings in a local 1920s construction boom and in a 0.7-mile stretch of Belknap Place in the Monte Vista Historic District that is the oldest concrete street in Texas.
