Pastors' Corner

We will be holding Junior School Week of Worship every morning next week from 8.45am - 9.30am at the Fox Valley Community Centre. Parents are always welcome to attend.

Each year we try to do something special to end the Week of Worship. This year we will be having a free concert with the famous christian kids artist - Colin Buchanan. This concert is planed for Friday Night 10th November at 6pm gates open at 5.00pm. It will be held as an open air concert on the synthetic grassed area (outside the school office on Level 1). Don't forget to bring a picnic blanket or camp chair!!

Colin Buchanan is a Dublin-born ARIA, APRA and 9 times Golden Guitar winning singer/songwriter whose diverse career includes being a beloved ABC TV Play School presenter, sought-after hit song collaborator, Australia's #1 Christian kids artist and regular panelist on ABC Sydney Drive's "Thank God It's Friday" with Richard Glover and the cream of Australia's comedy community.

Sunset Garden Party - Thursday, 9th November 2017

The Home and School Committee would like to invite you to a Sunset Garden Party night at School for all the teachers/parents and families.

Date: Thursday 9th November - 5:30pm -7:30pm

Location: School Campus

The event is free, all drinks will be provided. Children are welcome to come along and enjoy the dinner too.

We ask that all families please contribute a plate of food to share for dinner for the evening.

If your surname begins:

A-K - Could you please contribute something savoury for dinner - Suggestions include salads / pasta / quiche / frittatas / scrolls / anything vegetarian etc

L-Z - Could you please contribute something sweet for dessert.

Please ensure all food is vegetarian.

We look forward to welcoming you for a fun night for the school community to come together.

Music Creative Night, Years 2 to 6 - Wednesday 15th November 2017

Every year we hold a concert showcasing the musical efforts and accomplishments of our students. This year we have scheduled Wednesday, 15th November 2017 as our concert date. The concert will start at 6.30pm sharp and will conclude by 7.30pm or shortly thereafter. This music night is a compulsory School event for all students in Years 2 to 6, if your child can't attend please contact Natalie Miller at nmiller@wahroonga.adventist.edu.au so that we can make adjustments to ensembles where necessary.

Primary School Speech Night

Speech Night will be held at Hornsby RSL in the Showroom on Wednesday 6th December commencing at 6.30pm SHARP!! All students from Prep to Year 6 are involved and will need to arrive NO LATER than 6.10pm. Full school uniform must be worn. Please note that no alcohol is permitted in the function area.

It will also be a HALF DAY at school, so students can be rested for the evening. Please pick your child up at 12.00pm from level 1. If you are unable to do so there will be supervision at school.

Please note that if your child is going to be in OOSH care they must be picked up from there BY 6pm.

Cafe on 3

Café on 3 is open on Mondays and Fridays from 2 – 3pm. Come along and sample the student’s new menu! Please sign in at the School Office before making your way to Level 3, everyone is welcome.

New School App!!!!

If you haven’t already downloaded our new School App just go the App Store/Play Store, search for Wahroonga Adventist School and install it for free. It’s important we can communicate with all our families via the app so please download it asap! In addition to correspondence you can also access urgent updates, Flexischools, Newsletters, the Canteen and more!

Upcoming Junior School Events

Intensive Swimming Program

Our Intensive Swimming Program for Prep - Year 1 will be held over 2 weeks from Monday 13th November– Friday 24th November (Mon, Wed, Thu & Fri) excluding Tuesdays. Prep swimming classes are now FULL - so no more bookings can be taken. A timetable will be emailed soon with swimming class times for Prep - Year 1.

We have asked for helpers. If you are able to help we will need to have your WWC number and details. Please ensure we have a copy of this (which includes your birthdate) at the office so we can confirm your with The Office of the Children's Guardian.

Junior School Day of Worship

Kindy & Year 1 will be attending a Day of Worship on Thursday 2nd November and Years 2-4 will be attending their Day of Worship at on Friday 3rd November both at Mountain View Adventist College. Students will be catching buses, all permission slips should have been returned to your child's class teacher. This is a fun day where our students get to meet & worship with other students from Adventist schools around Sydney. Details are below:

Date: Friday 3rd November 2017

Time: Students need to be at school at 8.30am. Our bus will leave at 9.00am SHARP! We will return to school at approx 2.30pm.

Dress: Full Summer Uniform (Not sports uniform)

What to Bring: Snack, recess, lunch and a water bottle in a backpack

Just a reminder that in the afternoon there will a short concert by a girl from Brazil who is in the country fundraising for orphanages in Brazil. It would be appreciated if students could bring a gold coin donation that will help her with her fundraising.

Junior School Uniform Fitting Days - 30th November and 1st December 2017

Our Junior school Uniform Shop fitting days are on Thursday 30th November and Friday 1st December for all students purchasing the Junior School uniform. Parents are requested to join their child for their fitting time. Fitting times are booked online through Flexischools by following the link below:

It is really important to attend the fitting days to purchase uniforms as there will be limited time on Registration Day.

Prep Orientation

Prep Orientation will be held on the mornings of Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th Novembrer 2017 for children attending Prep in 2018. Your child will only need to attend 1 of the mornings and letters will be sent home soon. There will also be a morning tea held for parents.

Middle School News

NSW PSSA Athletics Championships

A huge congratulations to Kanya Young, Cameron Kueh & Sarah Cass who competed at the PSSA Athletics State Championships on Wednesday 18th & Thursday 19th October.

Kanya (Year 6) received two bronze medals in the 100m & 800m parathlete multiclass events and Cameron Kueh ( Year 5) came 2nd in his heat in the 11 Yrs boys 100m and 17th in the finals!! Well done, we are extremely proud of you!!!

CSSA State Triathlon – Thursday, 26th October 2017

On Thursday 26th October, 6 students represented our School at the CSSA State Triathlon at the International Regatta Centre, Penrith. Ben Yapp competed in the junior boy’s individual triathlon, completing a 300m swim, 5km ride and 2km run and came 17th. Well done! Two teams of Junior boys competed in the team triathlon. This event allows 3 students to complete one leg of the event, then tag their team mate to continue the next leg. The efforts of James Bell, Ben Yapp, Joshua Taylor, Nathaniel Sperring, Billy Jameson and Zach Goodacre were commendable with all having a great day! Keep an eye out for this event next year! It would be great to take more students to represent out school.

Year 8 Forensics Elective Excursion – Friday, 27th October 2017

The Year 8 forensics class were lucky enough to visit the Australian Federal Police headquarters on Friday and we were treated to an inside look at their facilities. Several members of the AFP presented to us on their use of ballistics and digital forensics in solving crimes. We were granted access to the firing ranges and had demonstrations of different types of weaponry and training techniques. Students and teachers were also able to have hands-on access to equipment worn and used in police work. A huge thanks to Steve who allowed us this once in a lifetime access into our Federal Police.

Upcoming Middle School Events

Years 5/6 NRL Bears Gala Day - Monday, 6th November 2017

Selected students from Years 5 & 6 have been asked to represent the School at the Stage 3 NRL Bears Gala Day to be held Monday, 6th November at Foxglove Oval in Mount Colah. Students are to make their own way to/from the event which commences at 9am and will finish around 2.30pm. Students are to wear their sports uniform and take their lunch, snacks, hat, and plenty of water.

Years 5/6 Milo Cricket Gala Day - Wednesday, 8th November 2017

Selected students from Years 5 & 6 have been asked to represent the School at the Milo Cricket Gala Day to be held on Wednesday 8th November at Hassell Park in St Ives. Students are to make their own way to/from the event which commences at 9am and will finish around 2.30pm. Students are to wear their sports uniform and take their lunch, snacks, hat, and plenty of water.

Year 7, 2018 Orientation Day - Thursday 16th November

Year 7 Orientation Day will be held on Thursday 16th November. All current Year 6 students are to make their way to the Year 5/6 shared space on Level 3 by 8.15am. The day will conclude by 3.10pm. Students are to wear their full school uniform.

Middle/Senior School Uniform Fitting Days - 23rd and 24th November 2017

Our Uniform Shop fitting days will be held on Thursday 23rd November and Friday 24th November for all students purchasing Middle/Senior School Uniforms.

Parents are welcome to join their child for their fitting time, however it is not compulsory. If you would like us to fit your child and email the sizes to you so you can order on-line, please let us know.

HOME AND SCHOOL MEETING

DAD'S CAMPOUT EVENT

Thank you to the many families who attended the Dad’s Camp Out event over the weekend. We had a huge turnout and from all reports from the Dad’s / kids, the event was a huge success. We were most grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding in having to relocate at such short notice, but the kids seemed to really enjoying seeing their old campus again.

We were most grateful for all the volunteers throughout the event. A special note of thank you to following people who contributed a lot of time and energy to making sure the event ran so smoothly - Jeanne Van Warmelo, Edwina Spooner, Catherine Manners, Naomi Granger, Sundeep Dhanda, Mick Monteleone, David Harris and Kelly Oldfield.

SUNSET GARDEN PARTY - Thursday 9 November - 5:30pm -7:30pm

Parents and teachers and the whole school community are invited to come along for a relaxing night mingling and enjoying a shared pot luck dinner and dessert at school.

Children are most welcome to come along and there will be games on the oval to en-tertain the kids.

The Home and School Committee will be supplying all drinks, and also some ice blocks for the kids.

We do ask though that each family brings a plate to share. Please remember we are a vegetarian school and would therefore ask that all meals are vegetarian.

BEYOND OUR SCHOOL YARD - TWO PROJECTS IN LEAD UP TO CHRISTMAS

This is an initiative supported by our Home and School Committee and the Student Representative Council. The role of which is to bring attention to and focus on those in need outside of our own community. This term we will be encouraging our children to provide Christmas gifts to others.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

For the third year running we will be supporting Operation Christmas Child –sending a shoe box of gifts to those in need overseas. Last year we provided over 130 boxes which was a great effort! Boxes and instructions will be available shortly.

KMART WISHING TREE

In addition, this year we will be offering assistance to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal providing gifts for Australian children through the Salvation Army and Mission Australia. A Christmas tree will be set up in the School in November which will have gift cards listing specific present and age group required for you to take and return with a gift.

Library News

Last Week of Borrowing

Next week (Week 5) will be the last week of borrowing for this year. Please remind your children to bring their library bags so they can take advantage of borrowing over the week, and if all books can be returned promptly by the end of Week 7 (Friday 24th November) it would be much appreciated.

Library WebOPAC:

The Library WebOPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is now up and running. To access it use the link on the Skoolbag App or log on at www.accessitsoftware.com.au/SVN01/#!dashboard. To access your child’s personal records enter the password which should be the first 4 letters of your child’s surname followed by the first letter of their given name (ie SAVAL). If this doesn’t work email Mrs Savage for your correct details - library@wahroonga.adventist.edu.au.
