The Big Picture Understanding the ENG 122 Course Structure

I think you'll find this infographic, created by our dean, to help you visualize the progression of our course and how the assignments fit together.

As we begin our work together, I think it would be ENORMOUSLY helpful if you have a sense of the big picture of our course, the goal toward which we are working. Ultimately, our class is about understanding analysis and writing an essay in which you analyze one of the selections provided in Module 1. Every module is then helping us understand:

  • The concept of analysis and how to read our essays and understand them on a critical level. The steps of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, and editing).
  • The particulars of properly presenting your final essay. Each assignment is taking us step by step through this process. We'll start by choosing an essay and learning how to take useful notes on it that will help us understand it. You'll get feedback on this, which you can then apply to your writing plan, which will then lead to a draft of the essay.

Rather than rushing to the draft of your essay, we're going to take some time to make sure we have a clear understanding of the essays and the points we want to make as we analyze them. In other words, we are formalizing the prewriting/planning process by having you submit notes and a writing plan before you actually write the first draft of your essay.
