Medium of the Art/ Technique of the Artist
Painted by Childe Hassam, the Northeast Gorge at Appledore artwork is a gorgeous illustration of Hassam's adventure to the island of Appledore. My picture of this piece of artwork does not do justice to the painting itself. Although its impossible to tell from my photo, the artwork had a 3D element to it. Each brush stroke was carefully placed and brought to life due to difference in thickness of the paint across the canvas. For example, the rocks tended to stick out further than the sky which gave a truly "real-life" feel of the island. The artwork conveyed a sense of peace as it made me feel like I was on a remote island that distracted you from the day-to-day problems and stress humans deal with.
Design of the Museum
The David A. Cofrin Asian Art Wing was the most appealing exhibit to me due to its style of "openness" and dedication to Asian architecture. The clean, light wood made me feel as if I had just visited Japan. The large window in the background faced an outdoor garden and pond which truly emphasized the importance of nature to Asian cultures, along with giving the exhibit a "natural light" feel. Along with feeling like I am in a different culture, this particular wing made me feel peaceful. Not only did the open arrangement of the art create a sense of calmness, but the art itself had a mellow, soothing essence to it.
Art and Core Values
My Grandpa is an antique lamp collector and has hundreds of lamps scattered around his house. When I saw this piece of art by Louis Comfort Tiffany, it instantly reminded me of him and how much fun I have when I visit his house every year. Although it may seem a bit odd to someone else, this piece appealed to my core values of love and family. The Eighteen-Light Pond Lily Lamp reminded me of the importance of family because, even though it may be hard to see everyday, your family is always there for you. The lamp, in a sense, represents family because when you are going through a dark time, your family will always be there to support you and bring a little light to your world.
