  • 1968 - iron ore is discovered in the Pilbara and a railway is built to the Indian Ocean.
  • 1970 - Royal Dutch Shell purchases Billiton.
  • 1984 - BHP purchases UTAH International from General Electric making it a coal exporter and a global minerals company.
  • 1990 - BHP purchased Escondida in Chile making it one of the world's largest copper mining companies.
  • 2001 - BHP and Billiton merge.
  • 2016 - 2nd largest mining company on the planet
