The Alchemist and His Journey BY: Jeffrey Proodian

“Treasure is uncovered by the force of flowing water and it is buried by the same current.” (27)

This was spoken by the elderly man to Santiago. It is saying that treasure is uncovered by the person who finds it and buried by that same person. In life, elderly people have been through it all and are very wise and know what they are talking about so it is smart to listen to them. I like this because it is saying follow what your mind tells you. Most people are too scared to pursue their dreams. You should never be scared of what you don't know about. This makes me want to follow my dreams of things that I wouldn’t think I could do.

“And maybe it wasn’t that they were teaching me, but I was learning from them.” (58)

Santiago says this about his sheep. This is saying the sheep are teaching him lots of things on his journey even though they can't talk and aren't trying to teach him things. This stood out because it is interesting how people you don't even know can teach you things even if they aren't talking to you. Sometimes it is important to pay attention to some things around you because it may pay off later. I like this because its saying that sometimes the things you think wouldn’t help you, actually do help you.

“Eat when it’s time to eat.” (89)

The camel driver said this to Santiago. The quote is saying don’t be impatient and wait until the time comes. Even when you want something so bad don't rush it because that might mess it up. I like this because my dad always tells me don’t rush things and to always take for time. For Santiago’s Personal Legend he is saying be patient in life. Santiago approaches times in his journey when this is need. A example is when he meets Fatima and has to leave her and come back which is a very hard thing to do when you love someone and he was very patient.

“There’s no such thing as coincidence.” (72)

The Englishman says this. He is saying that this happened for a reason. The Englishman thinks that when something coincidental happens, it happens for a reason in life. It stood out to me because I think he is correct. According to the Englishman you see something you aren't supposed to for a reason. This shows Personal Legend because everything is meant to happen it wasn’t just a coincidence.

“People learn, early in their lives, what is their reason for being.” (26)

This quote is spoken to Santiago by the king. It is saying that when you are younger you find what you like to do and why. Usually when you are young you try knew things because you don't know what you like until you try it. When I was young I was in many sports but in 7th grade I narrowed it down to just surfing. This quote stood out to me because I found out what I wanted to do when I was 13. You can't say you don't like something if you have never tried it.

“There is only one way to learn… it’s through action.” (125)

The alchemist says this to Santiago after Santiago tells him he didn’t teach him anything. The quote says that the way to learn is by actions not voice. I like this because lots of things in life involve action not listening. Also this means that you won't learn if you don't try something. For example whatever you like to do, you can't get better if you don't keep practicing through your actions. This is teaching Santiago to watch more and not only listen and come a little bit out of your comfort zone to do new things.
