MCNAIR STUDENT WINS AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY RESEARCH AWARD

We would like to congratulate McNair senior Kaream El-Adle, who won first place at the American Chemical Society’s Seton Hall Fair for his research with Dr. Luis Avila at Columbia University. This research involved identifying mystery organic compounds and creating a spectral library as a reference for other chemists and was conducted as part of the Society’s SEED Program, which connects low-income students with professors at top-ranked universities. Kaream’s accolade extends beyond pride and prestige. The program encouraged his love for chemistry, a field which Kaream is seriously considering as a career path. His high school experiences also contributed to his interest and work ethic: “Although a majority of my passion is directly because of the summer research I conducted at Columbia, it is also due in part to McNair Academic High School,” he explained. “The school helps foster an intellectual community where creativity can roam free.” - by Sofia Lesnewski

UNDEFEATED TENNIS CHAMPION LEADS TEAM TO 5TH STRAIGHT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

Most athletes recognize that their performance will fluctuate. It is natural to have a combination of wins and losses. However, one extraordinary athlete has gone undefeated in Hudson County tennis during her time at McNair Academic and was recently named Hudson County Player of the Year: Adriana Gotay. Adriana started playing tennis in the sixth grade, after her father encouraged her to pick up a new sport. Despite already having three years of experience, she was nervous entering McNair, as she was unsure of what to expect from the team. Looking back on her freshman year, she describes herself as “shy,” but over the course of her tennis career, she has evolved. “From my freshman to senior year, not only did I become a better player, but I also gained more confidence on the court,” she explained. “I realized that when I was confident my matches would be easier for me and more enjoyable.” Competition necessitated this newfound confidence. Since Adriana was undefeated coming into 2016 season, her opponents were determined to beat her. Adriana rose to the challenge, maintaining her win streak and leading her team to its fifth straight county championship victory. She credits Coach Taunean with her success, stating that he has encouraged her and has acted as a confidant. Her teammates have consistently supported her, and they often celebrate wins together with pizza. As for how her time on the team has impacted her? Adriana didn’t hesitate: “I had a surreal four years on the team that will be in my memories forever.”

K-2 STUDENTS OF PS 23 GIVE THANKS WITH FOOD DRIVE

Thanksgiving is that very special time of year when we spend time with family and friends; it is also a time for giving thanks. At the PS 23 MarcAnthony DiNardo School, the community, faculty, staff, and students came together for a seventh-consecutive year to do just that. This year, under the guidance of Assistant Principal Asael Salgado, the faculty, staff, and community generously donated hundreds of nonperishable food items, which were then organized into 28 food baskets. Those food baskets were then given back to the PS 23 community members who would most benefit from some good tidings during the Thanksgiving season. Additionally, PS 23 K-2 students continued to learn about giving back to the community while helping out their fellow neighbors. K-2 students were actively involved in the collection, organization and distribution of the food items. They enjoyed not only celebrating the season of giving, but also the true meaning of teamwork.
