Men's Shed Vernon Newsletter #27, September 2020

On the Cover: Our new Men's Shed sign is looking right at home. It's a generous gift from Markets4Us, who have an affinity for what we are doing for our guys, and for our community. Thanks, Kelly!

Our Mission: We Build Meaning & Well Being into Men's Lives By Engaging Hands, Hearts & Minds.

Hearts: We Did Some Visiting

Welcome new members Daniel H, Mark C, Peter M, & Roy W. We're looking forward to getting to know you better.

Like our friend, here, Men's Shed Vernon is a safe meeting environment, but our capacity at The Shed has been reduced during the recent health concerns. Guys need more interaction with other guys...the Basset hound only goes so far.

Fear not!. We're Still "Packing Them In" Online...

Every Monday morning, 10 - 20 Mens Shed guys meet on ZOOM without any care for how close we are to the next guy on the screen. It's great to catch up with one another, and the goings on at The Shed.

You should squeeze in next week. We'll all scooch over for you.

Welcome our newest member Roy W. Roy is an avid golfer, and used to be a Snowbird, but he's going to perch here with us this winter.

Visiting and encouraging are vital to well being...

Mackie House Men's Shed Social

We recently had a perfect day to gather, visit responsibly, hear our five year strategic vision proposal, and to celebrate our accomplishments.

Thanks to Bill A, and John R for putting on an amazing lunch!

Food always adds to the fun. Especially the desert...right, Steve?

An amazing array of talents and backgrounds gather at Men's Shed Vernon.

A great day for guys to gather in the late summer sunshine.

We heard from Gord, a visiting friend, on the great work being done in Alberta by "Sleep In Heavenly Peace", who are making free beds for kids who have to sleep on the floor.

Is there a champion here for this outreach?

We've Got to THAT more often!

As well as attending Men's Shed during the week, it's encouraging to hear that so many of our guys and couples are building new friendships by meeting socially for coffee or at one another's homes. Good on you, and good FOR you, guys!
THIRTY THREE MSV guys are now signed up to inform, interact and influence one another on our exclusive facebook site. Click the link below, and then "Join". Roy U will do the rest. THANKS, Roy!

Hands: We Got Some Stuff Done!

Our Men's Shed friend, Jim P stopped by one day to say that he saw this great, sturdy bench up at the Rogers Pass Visitor Centre. He said he HAD to have one just like it for the Allan Brooks Nature centre, and wanted to know if the Men's Shed guys would build him one .

Of course we said ...YES!

Dave A volunteered to be the point man for the project. He even drove up there himself to take a look and a few measurements.

We got a deep community contribution discount on the cedar from John H. Wow...this is coming together!

The guys got to work cutting, joining, planing, drilling, and assembling. They even delivered and installed the bench for Jim and his crew.

Mel H convinced these three lovely ladies from his family to model our handiwork!

Jim's team put a nice finish coat on the bench to preserve it for years to come.

Another Men's Shed "Made For Vernon" project. Well done guys.

What's Next?

Where's that 120 grit sandpaper when I need it? Turns out that Ron L was thinking the same thing, so he did something about it. Atta Boy, Ron!

New member, Peter M got right to work in The Shed, and made some Kitchen and Dining Room enhancements to his RV trailer.

Peter earned the coveted "Spousal Approval" award so sought after when building Shed projects.

Of course he had a little help from new friends. That's what The Shed is all about.

Wait... There's More! It's been a busy month, guys:

Do any of you remember that game from the 80's or 90's called Lite Brite?

Well, Men's Shed built one FIVE TIMES the normal size as a new interactive attraction at The Okanagan Science Centre!

First...Roy programmed the CNC router to cut over 300 identical holes to accept the liquid filled "Pegs". They turned out just right.

The game faces of the Super Lite Brite were painted black.

Garth and Bruce K fitted LED light circuits.

Lloyd K added some HOT glue reinforcement. He also cut out the stands and the trim.

Oh yeah...Lloyd and Wilda also celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this month. Congratulations, you two!!

Stop by the Okanagan Science Centre at Polson Park in downtown Vernon, and try your hand at a Lite Brite design of your own.

Tribute for a community minded Rotarian

CMHA's Lenai and Men's Shed guy Roy pose for photos with the signs made to recognize the great contribution of Kal Rotarian Dave DeShane in making the new CMHA Community Kitchen a big success.

Minds - Staying Involved

Living Larger by Leaning into Help

Dementia, like many illnesses, really alters life's plans and routines. Wally & Marilyn G have learned to ease the impact of dementia by reaching out and accepting help. Family, time at the lake, Men's Shed, and the Alzheimer Society have all helped this courageous couple stay close. Ask for help early, is their advice. That's what we're all here for...
What Does 140 Over 90 Mean? Know Your Blood Pressure.

You + 2

Are there a couple of important guys in your life? We're sure there are. Give them a call today ( or better yet, RIGHT NOW ), and ask them...

They''ll appreciate your concern more than you know.
Thinking about others diminishes concerns about ourselves, and can help to brighten your outlook.
Drop me a note if you would like to add a friend, (or delete) a name to our newsletter mailing list. We won't share it. rverlage@gmail.com
One thing that we WILL share is some quality time, some stories, a listening ear, and some projects when we meet. Don't forget to tell other guys about what's happening at "The Shed"..

Men's Shed Vernon is open Monday - Saturday 9AM - 1PM.
