Sonya D. Rambo ED 202 Portfolio, FALL 2016

PART ONE

When seeking employement we don't evaluate our gifts. We take jobs based on pay, location, what popular or others advice. If we readly examine ourselves we might find our "direction".

INTRODUCTION

Hello my name is Sonya Rambo. I am a Alternative Certification Student. Fall 2016 is my 2nd semester attending LSU-S. I have been employed in business, real estate and customer service. My desire as of late, is to find my purpose. I believe it is important to operate in my purpose. It has been a very interesting few months as a education student. The experience has taught me more than I can express. It has been challenge at times. The best thing about a challenge it teaches us about ourselves. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

MY PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

Purpose of Education

The purpose of education basically is to create a more literate society. A society where the members are able to function on a basic literacy level. But, literacy is not all that is important in education.

Society and the Educator

Education involves learning customs, skills and the ability to co-exist with others. The education of a society or community is far beyond just reading and writing. When someone is taught a skill or behavior the society benefits as a whole. Because of the potential impact of an educator, the profession of education is one of the most important to the society.

Role of the Educator

The role of educator in today's society is somewhat complex. It's is complex because society has changed tremendously in the past few decades. The educator has always been a leader in society. A educator is a role model, confidant, encourager, and mentor. The educator has the ability “unlock” the potential of learners. An educator should be a positive influence. The educator should inspire learners to achieve.

My Desires as an Educator

My desire as a future educator is to be a positive influence. I feel it is very important for the learner to feel “empowered” to learn. The atmosphere should be one of safety, not just in the physical sense, but in the emotional as well. I would like to create a “safe zone”. The learner should feel it is ok to be “wrong” and to explore. I want learners to feel it is ok to express their thinking.

I gain strength from the stories of others accomplishments. As an educator, I would like to impart strength to my learners, giving them examples of others achievements. I will be a constant encourager.

My educational style will be one of “I can”. I can achieve a goal, despite how is looks. Dream big and dream in color. Dreaming should not have limitations.

Best Learning Atmosphere

In my opinion learners learn best in an atmosphere that fosters creativity. The learner can learn in most any environment. The learner can be forced to learn by threats or even coercion. But, ultimately there is a level of freedom for a learner, when they feel the freedom to create or express themselves. Creativity breeds the desire to explore. When a learner explores, they find answers or solutions. These type of learners find solutions which are “outside of the box”.

Learners Emotional Needs

Learners are diverse in their physical appearance, their personality and their academic abilities. The educator should be aware of the differences. As an educator, I will continue to address the need to create a “safe zone”. The opinions of learners should be valued. The learner will be prompted to expressing themselves. The learner will be encouraged to think more critically or deeper. An educator is responsible for the “tone” of his or her classroom.

All Can Learn

I am on the path to becoming an educator. But, I am also a parent of two very diverse children. I know for sure all children can learn. The task is to determine how learners learns. The educator’s challenge is to find out what approach gives the desired result.

The Effective Educator

The "effective educator is :

  • Passoniate
  • Positive
  • Patient
  • Persistent
  • Productive

The educator is passionate about their craft. The profession of education is not just an occupation. Education is their vocation and occupation.

The positive educator sees the “glass full”. The positive educator looks at a difficult learner and see challenge not defeat.

The patient educator has the ability to know that the same difficult learner will show signs of improvement.

The persistent educator does not give in or give up. She or he looks for an alternate “route”.

The productive educator is motivated by the desire to accomplish things. The desire to “produce” a learner that is striving to learn more.

Closing

As an educator my overall goal, is to reach the learner. The learner is my goal. The goal is to ensure the learner is reaching their full potential. By reaching their potential, the learner is then equipped to give to others. The learner then becomes a productive part of society.

Philosophy on Educational Technology

Educators are responsible for their own personal growth. Of course, the school system they are affiliated with should have programs in place for professional development. But, the educator has to be proactive many times to take full advantage of what's available. For example, LSU-S offers many continuing education courses. But, it is up to a person to decide to take a class that interest them. Google Educator Certification is designed to allow an educator to independently learn Google technology.

I feel the same goes for an educator. It is up to the educator to participate and learn more and become proficient in an area of interest. Technology is ever changing. In order for an educator to be competent in technology, they should take advantage of continuing technology education opportunities.

There are multiple ways that technology can be incorporated into the classroom. Educators use videos as a part ot the lesson. The videos are used to emphasize a certain part of the lesson. Videos by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and Brain Pop are designed specifically to educate. Youtube has a vast collection of videos ranging from topics about counting numbers to biology. Formative assessments can be done via computer, tablets are cell phones. The formative assessments maybe games such as, Kahoots. An educator may incorporate the use of summative assessments by using computers, chromebooks and tablets to assess learners knowledge of a lesson. The computer is used for example, in a kindergarten classroom, to teach numbers, letters, colors, etc. Educational software is used in centers for many elementary classrooms. Google has designed multiple programs for classroom use.

Technology is used by learners to write a paper. The learner has access to the internet and the infinite information it provides. Technology provides a faster means to process and retrieve information. Technology has a vital place in the classroom, but it does not replace a skilled educator. My goal is to incorporate technology to enhance my lesson plans and class instruction. I will use videos to reinforce a lesson. The videos can be used as “hooks” to engage the learners. Computers, tablets and chromebooks will be used as methods or formative and summative assessments. As a educator, I will assign projects where learners are given opportunities to use the internet for research. The computers will also be used as rewards for staying on task and correctly completing work.

Internet safety is a serious issue. It is serious for all of us, but , especially for young learners. The educator is responsible to ensure that controls are in place to avoid learners accessing inappropriate sites. Educators educate learners about safe ways to navigate cyberspace. Learners should be taught the reasons for the safety precautions. I would use videos to teach cyber safety lessons. There are numerous videos about cybersafety and, cyberbullying The learners would be able to view these and even discuss or write their comments to the videos.

PART TWO

ISTE STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS
ISTE STANDARD ONE: Facilitate and Inspire Learning

The International Scociety for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standard 1.b : Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.

Ed 202 we were challenged to design a game controller. This project was for a Makey Makey. The idea comes from the Makers Space or STEM curriculm. My partner and I designed a game controller for a game to teach about Solar Energy. We used the game to demonstate how solar energy works and how it is used to power everyday life. The design goal for the game controller was to keep the sun in the sky to generate the the power needed for the solar panels.

Design for Makey Makey Project

The general consensus for the term "Makers Space" is an area for hands-on creativity. A "Makers Space" changes an abstract idea to a concrete product. The article 7 Things You Should Know About Makers Spaces @ Educause.edu, calls this "self-directed learning " and "supported invention".

ISTE STANDARD TWO:Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

The ISTE standard 2.d:Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.

My lesson plan is attached as an artifact representing the incorporation of technology into instruction. The lesson plan contains a video used to get the learners interested in the upcoming lesson. The video helps to introduce the topic. Summative assessment was included, such as, Google Form to be used as an "exit" ticket for the lesson. The lesson plan is also a use of technology, most schools are moving toward online lesson plans.

ISTE STANDARD 3:Model Digital Age Work and Learning

The ISTE standard 3.c : Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats.

During the course ED 202 we were challenged to write a digital newletter. The newsletter was centered on a particualar topic. Our assignment was to complete the newsletter so that it could be read by parents, community and students.

ISTE STANDARD 4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

ISTE standard 4.c : Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property and the appropriate documentation of sources.

The newsetter I wrote was TMI- Too Much Information. The purpose was to address the issue of cybersafety. The newsletter discusses how to safely search the internet. In the newsletter personal identifying information is explained.

ISTE STANDARD 5: Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership

ISTE standard 5.a : Participate in local and global learning communities toexplore creative applications of technology to improve student learning.

"FUTURE CLASSROOM ?"

Google has been accepted and incorporated into the curriculum of many school districts. During the ED 202 course we have been training for the Google Educator Level 1 Certification. My Google Educator training is in progess.

.

Technology is engrained into our lives. Education is not immune from it. The technology in education is training for the skilled employee of the future. A educator for today should be willing to be a learner aswell as a teacher.
