New York is a northeastern state. New York's capital is Albany, Albany is one of the 13 original colonies. The Appalachin Mountains cover the eastern half of the state. The Hudson River runs down the eastern half of the state into the Atlantic Ocean.
The state has many different statistics and symbols. Some symbols are the Empire State Building, the Harlem Globe Trotters, Times Square and Niagara Falls. About half a million New Yorkers fought for the North during the American Cilvil War. Buffalo and Rochester are New Yorks biggest cites. Many American Revolution wars were fought there. In 1609 Henry Hudson left the Netherlands and sailed into what is now the Hudson River.
New York has cool winters and warm summers. The average January temperature is 21 degrees (6 degrees Celsius). Average July temperature is 69 degrees (21 degrees Celsius). Adirondacks Mountains are in the northern part of New York. The states highest point is Mount Marcy , its in the Adirondacks, and its peck reaches 5,344 feet (1,629 meters).
Some things a lot of people know about New York is, September 11 almost 3,000 people were killed. Niagara Falls borders between New York and Canada. The Empire State Building was the worlds tallest building for 40 years. The Erie Canal was the first artificial waterway in the United States. The Harriet Tubman Home, Harriet was born into slavery in 1820 and escaped in 1849, and moved to Auburn, New York.
