“In Jesus’ message to St. Peter—“I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; ” This means that peter is important to the papacy.

There have always been opponents to the pope’s authority and universal jurisdiction over the Church, also called papal primacy. This teaching has origins directly from Christ’s commissioning of Peter to be the visible head of the Church. ”

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.…

Matthew 16:18

“The Second Vatican Council likewise taught on the primacy of the pope. A difference was that the Second Vatican Council began its teaching first on the ministry of the bishops and then addressed the pope in relationship to the bishops.”
