Why did you choose Ohio State: “The environment is designed to help athletes achieve greatness on the field and in the classroom. The team is such an accepting and supporting group of girls. The team feels like family already. The campus is beautiful and sports are appreciated and supported by the students. Lastly, the coaching staff is incredible. The staff compliments each other and really care about their athletes. Ohio State is an atmosphere where individuals can grow academically and athletically at the same time. Athletes will be given all the things and opportunities needed to achieve their goals. There is no place like Ohio State.”
Major: Sport Psychology
Sarah Charley
Why did you choose Ohio State: “The Ohio State University has a very active campus with events going on constantly. It’s close to my home, so I can always go back to see my family when I need to. On my visit, even though this is my hometown, I felt a deeper connection. The same feeling that girls supposedly have when they’re choosing a wedding dress, are the same emotions I felt on campus. I felt immediately attached to this school and like the doors of opportunity had opened wide just for me. The girls on the team were amazing and welcomed me with open arms and the coaching staff is phenomenal. I also greatly appreciate the diversity that is at the school, and on my team. People of all types come to OSU to be exposed to real life experiences and figure out who they truly are, and I can’t wait for my journey to begin.”

THE COMPLETE STUDENT-ATHLETE EXPERIENCE
BUCKEYES GO INTERNATIONAL
Genevieve Penzone studied abroad this summer in Tanzania while Sophomore Aaliyah Hernandez and Senior Jennica Jonovich participated in Bucks Go International programs. Jennica’s traveled to Vietnam for a program called Coach for College while Aaliyah’s service-learning group traveled to Costa Rica.
AALIYAH HERNANDEZ
“The trip to Costa Rica was amazing! I’m really glad it was a service trip because I got to feel like I was performing a service for the community that we were staying in and I also got to interact with the local children in a way that I wouldn’t have if I had just gone on vacation. The excitement on the kids' faces whenever they saw us or whenever we started playing with them was honestly the best part of the trip and I would do it again because I got to meet some of the most intelligent and sweetest kids ever. It was also just a unique learning experience because I had never been out of the country before so I got to see a different way of life from my own but still got to share my way love of sports with the people. I couldn’t be more grateful that Ohio State Athletics gave me the opportunity to go on that amazing trip.”
JENNICA JONOVICH
“This summer I volunteered with a program called Coach for College. The programs initiative is to promote higher education in disadvantaged areas of rural Vietnam through sports. For a month, I lived at a guest house in Vietnam and traveled to a local school Monday-Friday where I taught English and life skills and coached dance to middle school students. Fellow student-athletes and I were teaching them academics, but more importantly our job was to mentor and motivate them to continue their studies. In Vietnam, there is a high dropout rate after 9th grade due to the difficulty of continuing on to high school. A lot of the students are unmotivated to try to continue their education. Everyday, the kids were excited to be at school and ready to learn. They made huge improvements over the time that I was there and I’m so happy that I contributed to that! I’m so thankful that Ohio State gave me this opportunity and it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life!”
GENEVIEVE PENZONE
“This summer I had the amazing opportunity to go to Tanzania for a study abroad. On this trip I was able to study the impact of and response to HIV. While in Iringa, Tanzania I visited health clinics, government organizations, hospitals, neighboring villages and many more places that helped better understand this epidemic. From these visits and class work, I gained a better understanding of global heath and HIV from a public health, historical, and microbiological perspective. I also did a research project on religion in Iringa and the role is plays with HIV. Finally, I was able to explore the city, go on some amazing hikes, a safari, and meet some great people.”
Bucks Go Pro Trip
“We were given the opportunity to tour the Smuckers headquarters along with several other student-athletes. We learned a little bit about each department and the different jobs within each one, hearing from current employees about what they do on a day-to-day basis. We were able to get an idea of what it would be like to work for Smuckers, and how their internship process works. Overall it provided some very cool insight into such a successful corporation.”
Juniors Nikki Trzaska and Sammy Stone toured the Smuckers headquarters.
Wolstein Leadership Academy Retreat
“Wolstein leadership academy was an experience like no other. I got to learn from speakers and fellow student athletes about how to develop my leadership abilities and what that role means. Various activities and group discussions help define who I am and how I can take these skills to my team and into my professional life after college.“ Genevieve Penzone
“Attending Wolstein Leadership for the second year in a row was such an amazing experience. I was able to learn more about leadership and who I am. The various activities and small group discussions helped me network with other athletes and learn from their experiences. I’m excited to bring my experiences from Wolstein to my team to help build our team culture.” Adelaide Penzone
Summer Internship Recaps
“My experience through Bucks Go Pro has been nothing but positive and a great learning experience. I am working in the Digital Media Department for Athletics and have learned a lot about the social media marketing side that goes into promoting athletic programs. I have also learned a lot about professionalism through the development sessions that the interns have to attend weekly. My favorite part about my internship so far is learning how to operate different software that is used for digital marketing.” Adelaide Penzone
“In my internship so far, I have gained experience in a professional office setting that I have never had before. I’ve gained the confidence to interact with people in a different way which is something I value. My supervisor is very open to questions and has brought me along to sit in some really interesting meetings, which I really enjoy. Through the Bucks Go Pro internship program, I have learned how to network and connect with people in a professional manner which will really help me in the future! I am very grateful for this opportunity to experience “work life” because we, as student-athletes, don’t always have the time. I truly believe this experience has helped prepare me for the future.” Mara Hunter
“So far my internship experience has been amazing through the Bucks Go Pro 1.0 program. I have been working in the Event Management Department within Athletics and have had the chance to see a lot of behind the scenes work leading up to the events, and then working each. Through this, I have developed a much greater appreciation for all of the people that put in work to ensure that events run smoothly. I have worked a wide variety of events so far ranging from baseball games to country concerts to even a three-day Special Olympics. My favorite part about this internship so far is getting to know and work with the small, yet mighty bunch of event management staff. They make all the hard work such a fun, enjoyable experience!” Nikki Trzaska
“This summer I am interning with Upside, a company that runs a podcast focused on startup investing outside of Silicon Valley. I am a marketing intern who assists in managing all things social media and growing the company. Through the different voices we have featured, I have learned how much is going on in the startup world all over the country. I have also learned how important it is to stay active on online platforms and to keep generating fresh content to grow a following. The entire team works remotely the majority of the time while touching base through video calls or occasional meetings. My favorite part about this internship is that my bosses, Eric and Jay, have really allowed me to have creative freedom and learn as I grow.” Sammy Stone
“This summer I was an intern at NFM Lending, a mortgage company in Columbus, Ohio. My position title was business development associate and my role as a loan processor was to open loans that would then get passed on to the operation managers. From day one, my coworkers gave me a lot of responsibilities and helped me with everything I needed. I would work every day with several files and I had to make sure that the applicants submitted all the necessary paperwork. Another task that I had was to verify their previous and current employment to make sure that they had credit. I was also in charge of ordering the appraisals; which is an estimation of the home’s market value in order to ensurethat the amount requested by the borrowers matched the home’s true value. I really enjoyed working with NFM Lending because there was such a positive environment, and everyone welcomed me on the first day until the end of my internship. I am so happy I decided to take the opportunity to work for such an amazing company where I got to meet new people and grow personally as well as at the professional level.” Esther Clotet
“This summer was an extremely productive learning summer for me in the veterinary field. I learned how to treat and preform routine dental, reproductive, and sports medicine procedures on horses as well as read and diagnose ultrasounds and radiographs. I learned about small animal internal medicine practices including endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, and biopsies and helped preform these when necessary in the hospital.” Julianna Sweeney
“I spent my internship at the LVR-Klinikin Bonn, Germany. This clinic is a psychiatric hospital that focuses on patients with schizophrenia, depressive disorders, personality disorders and suicidal impulses. Throughout my internship, I conducted psychological tests, evaluated them, and reported them. Moreover, I participated in medical admission interviews and exit interviews of the patients. Furthermore, I was able to participate in the conduct of behavioral therapies and group treatments, as well as in psycho-educational seminars for the patients. In addition, I attended medical consultations, team meetings, supervisions and clinical training events during my time at the clinic. I am very thankful for the time I got to spend there, during which I learned a lot. I particularly enjoyed the direct contact with patients, where I was able to witness very positive developments of the patient’s conditions.” Sina Schwinn
“This summer at L Brands working in the external communications department I worked mainly on crisis and media management. I met many different executives and worked on a huge NGO research project. My favorite event that I attended as an intern was the Human Rights Gala that was held at the Ohio Student Union. I was able to hear Vice President Joe Biden and CEO’s of Columbus based corporations speak as well.” Whitney Harris

While in the office, I worked heavily with Customer Relationship Management and got to research and connect with companies in Columbus."

BUILDING TO THE FUTURE
We want to share some excited renderings we created with our digital staff for Buckeye Varsity Field and the overall look of the hockey stadium. We are looking to create a stadium that reflects this program's past successes and future triumphs.
This is just a model of our vision and I am working hard to make this a reality. Our press box renovation has been confirmed for August 2020. We would love to have your support or if there are any questions or interest – please reach out.
We would like to thank everyone who has generously donated to the Ohio State field hockey team in the past. You are a huge part of the growth of this program, and a big reason we have the resources to keep reaching for new goals. If you would like to donate to our program please click the link HERE.
