Snow Day Crave By Anthony Lopez

Do you hate when schools extend days all because of snow days? Well Don’t. Students get angry because MCPS schools add days all because of snow but that’s not exactly the case. Schools should keep doing what they are because of snow days. This is because MCPS are allowing 4 days off but it makes students think that schools are putting more days than they are supposed to have.

When Schools take the four days because of Snow days they have to have a certain amount of to keep four days.

In the MCPS Calendar it says“If schools are closed... The school year will be extended by...

5 days 1 day to June 19, 2017

6 days 2 days to June 19 and 20, 2017

7 days 3 days to June 19, 20, and 21, 2017

8 days 4 days to June 19, 20, 21, and 22, 2017

9 days 5 days to June 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23, 2017 ”(MCPS)

For this school year. This supports my topic because If we have 5 snow days then MCPS Schools add one day and keep at 4 snow days, this shows that MCPS are allowing us to keep 4 days off as it continues as well. The waiver MCPS gets is to help take off days instead of spending all 180 days of schools.

MCPS needs to request a waiver which has to be accepted by The Maryland State Department of Education to take off school days for snow days. It says from The MCPS Bulletin “MCPS can apply for a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) that would allow the district to go below the 180-day requirement. ”(MCPS) The Board-approved calendar also includes five contingency days means that if we had two snow days then this waiver would allow us to take those two days off the 180 requirement and has to do with allowing MCPS schools to keep the four days off. This also means that the days they add are just to keep us to just allow us to have four snow days off and no more than four days. But most people think including the students think that this doesn’t take away days, it’s just adding days.

People could also see this as the school adding more days than the days there are supposed to be. From the MCPS calendar people read “If the school year should be disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed, the school year will be extended.” (MCPS) This is said before showing the amount that they are adding to keep four days off. The calendar also doesn’t tell how the schools are adding days so it keeps schools at the maximum of four days off so it makes it seem to other people that this looks like it adds on to more than the 180 day requirement. Now returning back to how this isn’t the case because schools are to have the 180 day requirement and MCPS gives a Waiver to keep the maximum of four snow days off depending on how many snow days there are.

Now What do you believe that if MCPS should keep doing what they are toward snow days or agree with that MCPS are just adding to the 180 days? Now that after proving that MCPS aren’t adding more to the 180 day requirement, MCPS is just adding days because they aren’t going past 4 snow days with the waiver to go under the 180 day requirement. What do you believe or agree with - with me who thinks MCPS is doing something good for us giving 4 days off or do you agree with those that think that MCPS are just adding on more days?
