  • The lasting influences of Christianity are that it's the most widely practiced religion in the world, and because of it, there are holidays such as Christmas and Easter

  • Began in Saudi Arabia
  • Muhammad (Allah’s messenger/prophet) founded the Islam religion
  • Main beliefs: There is one God, he alone is almighty, creator, and sustainer of everything on earth, angels exist and are revered, God revealed books to his followers to guide them, believe in prophets/messengers for God, and Muhammad is the last, and believe in a day of judgment
  • spread through prophets, conquest, traders, & scholars
  • Lasting influence: works of art & architecture, and advances in math & science

  • Founded in Northern India
  • Siddhartha Gautama
  • Main beliefs: 4 noble truths & the eightfold path are the ways of life to be followed to end the cycle of reincarnation
  • How it spread: Indian emperor, asoka strengthened Buddhism with his support, spread to east and southeast Asia, and moved mostly through trade routes
  • Buddhism is a way of life that involves personal psychological training, practices of meditation & yoga, and holidays such as Buddha day & Dharma day

  • Originated in Canaan(now territory of Israel and Palestine)
  • Founded by Abraham
  • Main beliefs: commitment to a single, all-powerful God who created the world, and is the source of moral raw for humanity
  • Spread mainly in southwest Asia; through travel and trade
  • Lasting influences: celebrations such as Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashana, and Hanukkah, made Kosher foods, foundation for Christianity and Islam

  • Main beliefs: Brahman= one universal spirit; every living soul is part of it, Reincarnation = rebirth, Karma actions in one life affect the next, Dharma= personal duty

  • Lasting influences: sacred Cow symbol: treat everything with kindness & respect, and holidays such as Holi & Diwali
