WOodland shatters Swim record Story by Spenser Burkowsky

“This is the only meet I will be able to go to, so you better break the record,” former swimmer and Woodland alumni, Taylor Amore, demanded of senior captain Kyla Drewry.

0.4 seconds is all it took.

0.4 seconds is the time it takes to blink. 0.4 seconds is the time it takes to turn on a phone. 0.4 seconds may not seem like a lot to the average person, but for Jordan Williams, Kyla Drewry, Brooke Pope, and Dia Gawronski, it meant everything.

During a meet against Windsor Locks, Woodland’s 200 medley relay swam an astonishing time of 2 minutes and 2.98 seconds, breaking the previous record of 2 minutes 3.02 seconds. Williams started off the relay with the backstroke, her best event, and stayed neck and neck with her opponent for both laps touching the wall at the same time. Gawronski dove in over Williams and secured the lead with breaststroke, leaving the competition in her wake. Drewry maintained the lead with butterfly, and Pope finished strong with freestyle.

These girls have shown that hard work and dedication at practice gets the best results, and as captains of the team, have lead their team by example. Here are the captains recounting their record breaking race:

Breaking a school record is a special moment for anyone, but even more so for these girls. The captains have been swimming together for years, and during their swimming careers, they have developed an unbreakable bond.

Coach of the swim team, Mike Magas stated, “I think it was pretty awesome, they have been swimming together since middle school, so to see them do it together was pretty awesome and special.”

All the girls agree that it’s going to be an exciting season, with strong swims performed by the entire team. Gawronski predicts an exciting season saying , “We’re really excited to even lower that time, because it is so early in the season. So, I’m really proud we can start with such a big bang."
