Joseph Scarfone Pastor, Children's Ministry

Where are you from?

I was born in Germany and moved around many times growing up because my dad was in the U.S. Army. I’ve spent much time in Virginia, Arizona and South Carolina. When we settled down in sixth-grade, we landed in Pittsburgh, PA, which is where both my parents are from.

How did you meet your wife?

Jennifer and I met at a home Bible study through a mutual friend. As we were both seeking the Lord, we found each other.

What are a couple things you like to do when you have spare time?

I love spending time with my wife and five children (Jaxon, Patti, Joy, Judah and Malachi). We enjoy being in God’s creation and try to get outside as often as possible. We enjoy all things outdoors, camping, hiking, fishing and hunting.

What events or factors have shaped you and led you into ministry?

God rescued me from a life of depression and addiction. In my brokenness I cried out to Him and He saved me. Since the day God intervened my life has never been the same. He has radically transformed me.

My call into the ministry coresponded to my conversion and I wrestled with discerning the call to ministry versus the call the being a Christian. I began serving in the local church, and God used that time to confirm my call to full-time ministry. We sold two successful businesses and moved from Pittsburgh to attend Shepherds Theological Seminary. Since arriving in North Carolina I’ve been blessed to pursue both the MACM and MDiv from Shepherds Theological Seminary.

I am currently pursuing a Doctorate of Christian Education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary that specializes in spiritual formation and discipleship. I’m hoping to be used by God in making disciples who make disciples.

What excites you about children’s ministry?

I am passionate about the next generation! I want to empower parents to shepherd their children well and teach children to love the Lord. I want to encourage families to be fully engaged in living for Christ. I am excited to be part of a church that is committed to making dicsiples.
