MMHS Counseling Newsletter September 2020

Welcome Back! I don't know that we've ever been so excited to see our students! We have a lot of new people in our Counseling Department. We hope you get to know your counselor, as well as our Registrar and Counseling Secretary. We are here to help you with your college and career planning, as well as your social/ emotional learning.

Class changes were finalized on August 26th, and counselors are moving onto other projects including Sophomore PCCR's, Utah College Application Week and teaching college and career readiness lessons in the classroom. Make sure to check out our Upcoming Events, and other resources listed below. We are excited to serve our students and get to know you better this year.

Upcoming Events

August 26th- BYU Application is now open and can be found here.

Sophomore PCCR's will be starting around the 2nd week of September. Make sure to watch for a Calendly Link in your student email from your counselor to sign up for a time.

September 14th- Jostens will meet with both Juniors and Seniors in the morning regarding graduation packages, class rings, etc.

September 17th- Deadline to sign up for the October 10th, 17th, 24th, 25th National ACT Test.

September 23rd- Parent-Teacher Conference 3:00-7:00 pm.

September 26th & October 3rd- ACT Prep Classes at MMHS-Sign up in the finance office. Students take the course over two Saturdays and the cost is $50. Sign up quick to reserve your spot!

October 1st- FAFSA opens up to all seniors. We encourage all seniors to apply for potential grant money, loan options or work study to help pay for college. Visit fafsa.ed.gov for more information!

October 6th & 7th- UCAW (Utah College Application Week) Seniors will be filling out college applications in their English classes with counselors and college representatives.

October 7th- FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Completion Night from 5-7 pm in the MMHS Library Lab. If you would like help on the FAFSA this is a great event to attend.

October 7th- USU Open House event. 3:00-7:00pm at Provo Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Academic scholarships will be awarded on the spot to qualified students who complete an online application BEFORE attending the open house.

Scholarship Information

October 9th- DAR Good Citizen- For a senior student who demonstrates citizenship, service, leadership and patriotism.

October 26th- Horatio Alger-Senior who demonstrates financial need, displays integrity and perseverance in the face of adversity, 2.0 minimum GPA

October 31st- Voice of Democracy-For 9th-12th Graders who want to write an essay on the topic "Is this the Country the Founders Envisioned?"

Candice Brindley- A-Co

I have been in education for 17 years. I am so excited to be here are Maple Mountain High School! I spend most of my free time watching my four kids play soccer, softball, wrestling, football, or barrel racing. I also enjoy running, reading, and riding horses.

Love all things outdoors, especially hunting and fishing!

I love pickleball, golf, racquet ball, ping pong, Mickey Mouse, and Popeye’s chicken sandwich.

I knew I wanted to be a school counselor because of the school counselor I had in high school

This is my 21st year as a School Counselor and I still love it (with the exception of class changes of course!)

I'm obsessed with Garlic Tomato Toast, really good dark chocolate, and eating out at the Bombay House

I love hiking, weight lifting, and nothing makes me happier then fly fishing in the middle of a river

Caryn Neilson- U-Z

Some of my favorite things to do are surfing at the lake, couch surfing with a good book or a fun Netflix series, snowmobiling, camping, and riding horses with my family. You can usually find me in my office with a cold Coke or Mountain Dew.
