CRANBROOK V KINGS COLLEGE SATURDAY 15TH FEBRAURY 2020, KICK OFF 2.30PM, SANDS PITCH

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES 15TH FEBRUARY 2020

Today’s programme is sponsored yet again by Colin and Yvonne Tall of Hire4Lower who are of course the Club’s main sponsors. Our thanks go to Colin and Yvonne for their continuing generosity.

We welcome to the Tomlin ground Kings College Hospital RFC who are the current league leaders of Kent 1; they are one point ahead of us and we in turn are one point ahead of Southwark Lancers. It is likely that the title will go to one of these three clubs. In awful conditions we managed to win away at Kings, but it was clear then that there was little difference in standard between the two teams. Today’s match may well prove to be a tense affair as the winners may believe that their chances of securing the title will be much enhanced.

Discipline is a major issue in rugby today. Our discipline both on and off the field by players and spectators has much improved over the last few years. It is very important that we continue that upward improvement. One reason that Kent clubs are not receiving referees for their junior matches this season is the level of abuse that has been directed towards referees over the last two or three seasons; the referees have naturally voted with their feet and this is understandable. That is why both spectators and players must show proper respect to today’s match official Kevin Hurdwell who is supported by Bill Burton and Kevin Willis as referee advisor and referee coach. Refereeing is not easy and without our match officials’ games would not take place.

The major news on the field is that last week we defeated Old Whitgiftians in the Junior National Vase and so on the 14th of March we will be playing Hendon in the London final of that competition. The winners of that match will then be in the national semi-finals; the national final will be played at Twickenham. We must not look too far ahead but the performance by our first team in the competition has been exceptional and we can all be very proud of them. We hope that you will wish to support your team on the 14th of March. This game is being played at Hendon. Further details will appear on the club website in due course.

The Ladies team are second in the league and have four more league games this season. Their main challenge will be against the league leaders Tonbridge Juddians on the 23rd of February at home with kick off at 2pm. Your support on that date would be much appreciated.

On the 15th of March we are hosting the Kent under 20s at 2 pm and on the same day and at the same time our ladies are hosting Jersey ladies. Both matches should be excellent tussles and I hope that you will come along and support as well on that day.

The under 12’s already have one team in the Kent cup finals on the 26th of April and they have another team still in the competition but recently had their qualifying games postponed. Good luck to that side as well as it would be great to have two teams in the Kent cup finals

The under 13s have won all their games in the waterfall competition and they are through to the Kent cup final on the 5th of April; the under 14s play their semi-final on the 15th of March as do the under 15s. The under 16s have the Kent cup quarter-final against Canterbury on the 8th of March.

We are hosting the Under 9s Kent Minis festival on the 29th of March and I am sure that David and Steen will be much appreciative of any help that you might be able to give on that day. This is a very prestigious day in our calendar and as much assistance as possible is needed.

I am told that we have already sold 250 tickets for the Ball on May 16. This is a major fundraising exercise for the clubhouse development. Details of how to apply for tickets are on the club website and on various posters in the clubhouse.

On another positive note we are trialling Men in Sheds at the Club. I will deal with this more in due course.
