Belfer Bulletin July 09, 2021

Notes from Dean Nosanchuk

Our amazing Class of 2021 celebrated graduation in person (!!!) on the Einstein campus on May 27, 2021, supported and cheered on by their loved ones along with students, staff, faculty, and other guests. I was honored to host Kevin Li (in photo) in my laboratory during his gap year and throughout the past academic year, and he represents one of the incredible and resilient Class of 2021 students who found great success despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are so proud of our graduates and we wish them the very best as they set forth on the next steps of their exciting journeys.

Meanwhile, the Class of 2024 resiliently and smoothly completed their first year at Einstein and students are actively engaged in summer research and other growth experiences. The Class of 2023 efficiently transitioned to USMLE Step 1 preparations or Clerkships, and the clinical students are already making a positive impact on the patients they are working with and learning from. The Class of 2022 is in their final year and are writing personal statements, updating CVs and learning about the process for successfully Matching in their preferred field for ongoing medical training.

The faculty and staff in our MD program are continuing our efforts to optimize and improve our "new" curriculum for all our Class years. Our Task Forces working on our nascent Service Learning, Integration, and Impact programs continue to meet to develop strategies for the successful deployment of new, exciting, and impactful curricular activities.

And... Einstein is now formally and fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education https://www.msche.org/institution/9220/ and, thus, recognized as accredited by the United States Department of Education! This completes our transition from Yeshiva University's accreditation and opens new educational opportunities for Einstein.

Featuring: Anatomy Sectra Table

Dr. Priti Mishall and a few of our awesome MS1 students using the Sectra anatomy table.

On Thursday, May 27 we celebrated our 63rd Commencement Ceremony with a joint on-campus and virtual ceremony honoring our Class of 2021. More than 100 graduates gathered on the Price Center lawn to receive their degrees in a physically distant way. We were so happy to be able to give guests of our graduates the opportunity to also join the celebration on campus via live stream. The Einstein campus came together to celebrate our graduates in such a heartwarming way despite the circumstances. We haven’t had an on campus ceremony in decades so being able to celebrate at Einstein, our home, was incredible.

Congratulations to Marisol Figueroa from the Registrar's Office. She graduated with a Masters of Art Liberal Studies from Herbert H. Lehman College.

Congratulations, Dr. Alicia Martinez!

Dr. Martinez is currently a Program Manager in the Office of Medical Education and the Office of Diversity Enhancement. She just graduated with her Doctorate degree in High Education from Saint Peter's University.

Special shout out to Ms. Sara Weiner and Ms. Emilee Tu!

Dr. Michael Cabana, Physician-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), sent Department-wide emails acknowledging these two students as "CHAMpions".

Dr. Cabana communicated to Sara Weiner that he "appreciate[s] [her] extra effort and advocacy for our patients and families."

As for Emilee Tu, Dr. Cabana wrote, "I appreciate the extra effort you give for our complex patients and families to make sure every detail is addressed. It is this type of work that makes CHAM a special place for our community and a great children’s hospital."

It is obvious that Sara and Emilee's efforts are noticed and appreciated by their colleagues. Congratulations and thank you for being examples of exemplary Einstein students.

CUNY SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH GRADUATION

We are thrilled that our first cadre of Einstein MD-MPH students virtually received their MPH degrees from the CUNY School of Public Health on June 3, 2021. Congratulations to Jennifer Luk, Nicole Turturro and Samuel Nemiroff for being awarded the Dean's Merit Award for Service for the 2021 graduating year. In order to receive this award, these students needed to achieve around a 4.0 GPA and be recommended by faculty.

Einstein Students in the Press

An opinion piece by Emma Goldberg was published in The New York Times, titled "What the Covid Rookies Saw". Iris Lin, M.D., a recent Einstein Graduate had her story and experience shared in this essay (photo from NYT).

"In the final stretch of Iris’s last semester of medical school, she and her classmates were drawn into the riptide of a historic crisis. She’d planned to spend her spring celebrating the end of medical school and preparing for the start of her career in internal medicine. Instead, she joined the front lines of the fight against a plague." Click the button below to read further.
