St Joseph's Newsletter Term Two, Week Three

“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:18

Dear Families and Friends

It was pleasing to hear many positive reports about the events that took place at our school last week, while Mrs Donovan, Miss Tianna and myself were attending the Stronger Smarter Professional Development in Broome. We are looking forward to sharing our learning with staff and students.

Mother's Day

It was wonderful to hear that so many Mothers and Special Women attended our celebration last Friday. Thank you to Mrs Rudyard for organising our Liturgy and to the staff for providing a delicious afternoon tea.

Year 5&6 Camp Fundraising

Congratulations to Miss Gehrmann and her team of helpers on the success of the plant stall on Saturday morning. A reminder that all students who will be attending camp are required to assist with fundraising initiatives over the course of Terms 2 and 3. Please support the students with the following fundraising events held over the weekend:

· Selling glowsticks at the Kimberley Moon Festival on Saturday night.

· Selling plants and glowsticks during the Float Parade on Sunday afternoon.

Earbus

Earbus Foundation is a WA-based children's charity that works to reduce the incidence of middle ear disease in Aboriginal and at-risk children in our state. Earbus mobile ear health clinics offer full primary health care to these children in schools, daycares, kindergartens and playgroups. As well as providing comprehensive ear screening, the Earbus employs GPs, audiologists and ENTs so referral is quick and treatment is seamless.

“The idea of the Earbus Program is to take GPs to Aboriginal people instead of expecting them to negotiate their way through white fella mainstream services,” said Earbus Foundation CEO Paul Higginbotham. “This service model was designed by Aboriginal people, for Aboriginal people and it works to keep children in the treatment pathway from first contact to wellness.”

The Kimberley Earbus deployment will collaborate with WACHS Kimberley, the Kimberley Ear Health Planning Group and the existing ear health service providers. Potential key partnerships will be the Kimberley Population Health Unit, Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Corporation (KAMSC) and regional AMSs in Derby, Broome, Fitzroy, Halls Creek and Kununurra.

Catholic Education WA Regional Officer Carol Geurts says about Earbus, “I am really excited about what this means for our schools in the East Kimberley. Finally, a service to support our kids with ear health issues. A co-ordinated, holistic approach with the potential to eradicate otitis media issues in our communities.”

The launch of Earbus in the Kimberley is taking place at St Joseph’s this Thursday 17th May at 2:00pm. Attendees include Ms Josie Farrer MLA, Member for Kimberley, Dr Debra Sayce, Acting Executive Director of Catholic Education WA and Bec Smith, Regional Director of WA Country Health Services. Following the formal proceedings, we will enjoy afternoon tea on the front lawn. Staff, students and families are invited to attend.

Float Parade

Thank you to Miss Peters for coordinating our school's contribution to the Ord Valley Muster Float Parade this Sunday. It has been terrific to see a large number of students express an interest in being involved. Our theme for the parade is 'St Joseph's Ohana' and we are asking students to dress in Hawaiian-inspired costumes. Please contact Miss Peters for additional information: tara.peters@cewa.edu.au

Mini Vinnies

A number of Mini Vinnies students are preparing performances for the residents of the Kununurra Aged Care Facility. Thank you to Miss Eileen for accommodating these students by allowing them to practice in the Library during Tuesday and Thursday lunch borrowing times.

Sacrament of Eucharist

The Sacrament of Eucharist will be taking place for a number of students on Sunday 3rd June. Information for families will be sent home this week.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to those students in Years 3 and 5 who participated in this week's NAPLAN assessments. It was fantastic to see the manner in which students approached the challenges with which they were presented.

Welcome

We welcome Caroline McAdam to our team. Caroline will be working as an Aboriginal Teacher Assistant in Year 2 whilst Miss Susan is on leave. We look forward to benefiting from her wisdom during her time at St Joseph's.

Pupil Free Day

A reminder that Monday 28th May will be a pupil free day as staff will be participating in a professional development workshop about Brightpath, a student assessment and teaching evaluation tool. Stay tuned for further information about Brightpath, which will be a tremendous resource for assisting students with their writing.

Library Borrowing

Thank you to Miss Eileen Watkins who will be providing students with the opportunity to borrow books from the Library each Tuesday and Thursday at 12:45pm.

Have a great week.

Tim Hogan, Principal

RE News

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” James 1:17

MOTHER’S DAY LITURGY

During the month of May the Church honours our heavenly mother Mary. We celebrated the gift of our mothers and the important women in our lives who care for us on Friday at our Mother’s Day Liturgy. It was wonderful to see many mums, nanas, aunties and all the special women who do so much to enrich the lives of the children at St Joseph’s School, so that we could show our appreciation for all you do.

PENTECOST

This Sunday is Pentecost, which is significant as the birthday of the Church when we remember the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples of Jesus. This is a very special time when we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. On this day we are both grateful to our loving God and mindful of the Lord’s command to preach the gospel to all peoples.

Mrs Rudyard

Year 5 & 6 Camp Fundraising

Last Saturday some Year 5 & 6 students and staff held a Mother's Day plant sale outside St Vincent Pallotti Church. It was very successful and helped us get closer to achieving our fundraising goal. Thank you very much to the volunteers who helped out and to those who came and supported us.

We have drawn a few prizes recently after selling raffle tickets and lucky numbers:

¨ At the Mother's Day liturgy last Friday, Tuyi Taratara won the Mother's Day hamper.

¨ We had a special Mother's day Raffle and Jayda Elliott won the 14 year old Desert Rose.

¨ Katy Lee won a $50 Choppy's voucher. We have a few more lucky numbers available for a second Choppy's voucher, which will be drawn on Monday 21st May.

St Joseph’s School is a Nut Awareness Zone

We have a student who has a touch-sensitive, life-threatening nut allergy. Please do not send nut products to school in recess or lunch boxes. This includes peanut butter, Nutella and many muesli bars.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Canteen Volunteers Wanted

Miss Kris is looking for parents or friends of the St Joseph’s community who may be able to lend a hand. As they say, many hands make light work! If you can assist in any way, please have a chat with Kris or the Principal.

St Joseph’s School Uniforms

At St Joseph’s School we take great pride in our appearance. The school uniform is also an important aspect of child health and safety. It is a requirement that all students wear a St Joseph’s uniform (including a hat with our logo) that is purchased from our uniform shop. Similar items bought elsewhere may not be worn to school.

Please note that our “no hat, no play” policy will be enforced.

See our website for a full range of uniform items.

Uniforms may be purchased at any time from our office.

Praying the Rosary

Sr Marcella will lead us in one decade of the rosary each Friday at 7:35am on the grass outside the administration building. Please feel welcome to join us for five minutes of prayer.

New Enrolment Policy

The West Australian School Education Act (1999) stipulates that information about immunisation status and date of birth must be supplied when applying to enrol at school. As of 2018, a child’s birth certificate and immunisation documents must be provided before they can commence their schooling at St Joseph’s.

Thank you for your cooperation.
