Love Canal By- Gracie Rodlund & Jasarra Gantt

The Love Canal is a hazardous waste land in New York near Niagara Falls that is filled with tons of chemical waste, this topic is so significant because many people died, their babies were born with birth defects and lost their homes because of this.

The town Love Canal hit a major tragedy in 1978 when 21,00 tons of toxic waste that had been buried underground started to come through the peoples basement and backyards.

During the 1940's and 50's a company buried all of the toxic waste underground thinking it would never cause any trouble but 28 years later it caused major damage

People: It was estimated that 1 in 10 people would have a chance of getting cancer by breathing in the polluted air. 36 residents agreed to get tested. The results showed that the man breathing in the air had chromosomal damage. The polluted air goes into their houses, and all the trash started flowing into people's yards and towards the base of their houses.

Plants: When the harmful fumes were all in the air many of the plants were effected b it since their leaves were touching and they were breathing in the toxins the plants would usually shrivel up and die

Animals: Same thing goes for animals as it went for people the toxins were so bad for anyone or anything to breathe in that it would usually cause for something to go wrong in the animal or for them to die

Nearly twenty years later the cleanup at the toxic waste site was finished it took 21 years and cost close to $400 million, but most of the work was completed a few years before this article had been published in 2004.

In order to be able to clean up everything they had to evacuate 260 homes and sell a bunch of the land for people to do light work on.

In order to avoid this in the future they are going to start taking more and more precaution for as who land goes to and maybe keeping a closer on them to make sure that everything that they are doing is legal.
