February EdTech Find: Twiddla

Twiddla is a great online tool that allows you to collaborate with others on a whiteboard. According to their website,

"Twiddla is a real-time online collaboration tool. Its beauty is in its simplicity and accessibility: no plug-ins or downloads, no need to work around complex firewalls, no advanced scheduling. It’s available 24-7 and the only requirement is a computer with an internet connection and a web browser. It’s browser-agnostic, user friendly, and probably more fun than you're supposed to be having at work."

Basically it gives you an open space that is web-based (no need to download anything or sign up for anything). You can share that space with others by sending them a link that Twiddla offers, which takes them directly to that board.

Some screenshots of Twiddla in action

There are a lot of great features even when you're just signed in as a guest (otherwise, there is a premium account that costs money).

  • You can mark up/annotate an existing document (only pdfs at this time), a webpage, an image file, or the default empty whitespace.
  • You can use fancy math formulas.
  • You can use text and draw tools.
  • You can add links to other documents and/or websites.
  • You can add images on top of the document, webpage, image, or whitespace that is set as the background.

What's up with that?

Some D2L Weirdness to be Aware of...

Mark Tasks as Complete

Certain tools/features of D2L seem to be uncooperative if you have not marked all setup tasks as complete. Most likely, you can see a white bar just below your navbar in your course that says, "You have 6 setup tasks remaining."

You'll want to click on that bar/text. In the window that pops up, simply click "Mark all complete."

We're not sure why this is causing difficulties, and we've notified D2L. However, until the glitch is resolved, we recommend you make a habit of clicking "Mark all complete" in each of your classes. You will only need to do this once per course. That bar will not appear again after you mark all complete.
