Lyrics

You're broken down and tired

Of living life on a merry go round

And you can't find the fighter

But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out

And move mountains

We gonna walk it out

And move mountains

And I'll rise up

I'll rise like the day

I'll rise up

I'll rise unafraid

I'll rise up

And I'll do it a thousand times again

And I'll rise up

High like the waves

I'll rise up

In spite of the ache

I'll rise up

And I'll do it a thousands times again

For you

For you

For you

For you

When the silence isn't quiet

And it feels like it's getting hard to breathe

And I know you feel like dying

But I promise we'll take the world to its feet

And move mountains

We'll take it to its feet

And move mountains

And I'll rise up

I'll rise like the day

I'll rise up

I'll rise unafraid

I'll rise up

And I'll do it a thousand times again

For you

For you

For you

For you

All we need, all we need is hope

And for that we have each other

And for that we have each other

We will rise

We will rise

We'll rise, oh oh

We'll rise

I'll rise up

Rise like the day

I'll rise up

In spite of the ache

I will rise a thousands times again

And we'll rise up

Rise like the waves

We'll rise up

In spite of the ache

We'll rise up

And we'll do it a thousands times again

For you oh oh oh oh oh

For you oh oh oh oh oh

For you oh oh oh oh oh

For you

Figurative Language/Tone&Mood

Metaphor: "You're broken down and tired of living life on a merry-go-round" // Andra Day is comparing life to a merry-go-round. When she sings this, she's saying that some people feel like their situations in life are going around in circles, they keep doing the same thing over and over again. It's like your on a never ending merry-go-round.

Hyperbole: "I'll rise up and I'll do it a thousand times again" // It's an exaggeration saying that you'll rise up a thousand times again. Andra Day means that she will rise above all and will continue to do so for a thousand times.

Symbolism: "And you can't find the fighter but I see it in you so we gonna walk it out" // Fighter symbolizes a rebellious trait in someone. When Andra Day says she can see it in you, she's saying that even though you don't notice that trait in you, I do.

Simile: "I'll rise like the day" // When Andra Day says this, she is referring to the sun during a sun rise to the day.

Oxymoron: "When the silence isn't quiet and it feels like it's getting hard to breathe" // When you say silence isn't quiet, it's going against itself. It's like saying something is pretty bad. When she says this lyric, she says that physically around you it may be quiet, your thoughts are louder than words. Your worries are becoming so overwhelming and unbearable that it's bringing you down and you're being suffocated.

Hyperbole: "But I promise we'll take the world to its feet" // You can't really bring the world to its feet, so saying that statement is a hyperbole.

Personification: "But I promise we'll take the world to it's feet" // Even though some people say the world is alive, the world doesn't have arms and legs.

Tone // When Andra Day sings this song, she feels solemn because when she's singing "Rise up" it sounds serious, formal, and dignified.

Mood // When I hear this song, I feel encouraged because it makes me feel like I can breakdown and overcome all the barriers in my life that are blocking me from succeeding.

I chose Andra Day because I feel like she is a powerful African American Woman with a strong voice. Her lyrics are very understandable as well as relatable. She tells a story with her lyrics. When listening to her song, it's takes you on a journey.

Critique // I like Andra Day and her music because I can relate with her. Her voice is so strong and it touches my heart.

Andra Day stated "There's a lot going on in the racial climate—politics and all—and sometimes we just need a very simple message. No matter what you’re going through or what you’re dealing with, if you can just get up, if you can just rise to your feet and get up, then you can get through that day. And if you can do that one day, you can do it the next day, too."
