Staples boys' soccer dominates first round of state tournament Madeline Michalowski '22

The Staples boys' varsity soccer team advanced in the 2021 state tournament by defeating the Manchester Red Hawks 4-0 on Nov. 9 at Wakeman Field. The Wreckers are ranked sixth in the tournament with an 11-2-4 season record.

Coming off of a recent loss in the first round of the FCIAC tournament, the Wreckers were eager to return to the game. Just under 10 minutes after the 2:00 kickoff did the home team earn a penalty kick.

Striker Reese Watkins '22 stepped up to take the kick.

Seconds later the Wreckers were up 1-0 propelling them the rest of the match.

Staples soon found themselves celebrating again off of Matt Jordan '22 corner kick headed in by Ryan Thomas '22.

The home team went into halftime with two goals on their shoulder.
The mainly senior squad returned to the field determined to not let this be their last match of the season.
The second half proved full of opportunities for the Wreckers while the Red Hawks remained energetic on the field.

Staples found their third goal from tri-captain Jackson Hochhauser '22 followed by tons of uproar by the home team's crowd.

The fourth and final goal was Thomas '22 second of the match to advance them to the next round.
The Wreckers went on to win in the third round against the 22nd seed Conard. They look to advance further in the Quarterfinal game where they take on Fairfield Prep at 1:00 on Nov. 13.
