What's Happening This Week in 8th Grade???

English Language Arts

  • Read 180 (Romberg/Durrence): In READ 180, we will begin the document-based question activity “Robert Frost- Meaning and Metaphor.” In whole and small group, scholars will work the document-based question analysis activities. In independent reading, scholars will read books on their Lexile level from the READ 180 library and complete reading logs. Logs have been changed to ensure progress in writing for GMAS. In APP, scholars will independently work on selected APP segments to close learning gaps and complete APP logs. Scholars should have completed a total of 5 segments, 5 novels, and 5 Ereads by Friday, March 6th.
  • 8th Grade ELA (Hills): In 8th Grade ELA, scholars will analyze the poetry of Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, TLC, and Tupac to better understand: tone, mood, purpose, and figurative language. We will also begin continue working on our Black History Month Projects. We will complete a wax museum in the library on Thursday, February 28th to showcase an influential African American that fits the theme: "Champions of Change in Black History."
  • 9th Grade Literature & Composition (Hills/Romberg): Lit and Comp will continue to work on Unit 3: Coming of Age. Scholars have been loaned copies of the novel Romeo and Juliet (R&J) to use for the unit. Scholars will complete character analysis activities from R&J, complete written responses, and complete other activities to complete the novel study. Scholars should be reading at home to complete their Reading Guides. Romeo and Juliet projects due Thursday, Feb. 27th. Note: Scholars will take their 3rd quarter exam on Thursday, March 5th!!!
Note: All 8th Grade ELA and 9th Lit & Comp scholars will take the Spring Reading MAP Assessment during the first week of March!!!

Science

  • 8th Grade Science (Herndon/Winkworth/Beasley/Joyner): In 8th Grade Science this week, scholars will be presenting their Wave Movie projects. They will take a Wave Unit assessment followed by a Forces of Motion Pre-Assessment. Scholars will begin to explore Newton’s Three Laws of Motion with a Focus on the First two, objects in motion tend to stay in motion, and the force needed to move an object is dependent on the objects mass and acceleration.
  • Herndon's Tutorial: Thursday's 3:35-4:30

Social Studies:

  • 8th Grade Georgia Studies (Sanchez/Styron/Beasley/Joyner):In Georgia Studies, we will discuss the New Deal programs that benefited Georgia during the Great Depression, such as REA, SSS, AAA and the CCC. We will then move into WWII. We will talk about the causes of the war, and why the USA became involved- specifically Pearl Harbor. Scholars will also be put into expert groups to research the different ways Georgia contributed to the war effort. Group topics will include Liberty Ships, B29 bombers, military bases and important congressmen such as Carl Vinson and Richard Russell. On Friday, groups will make murals about Georgia’s contributions to present to their classmates.

Math

  • 8th Grade Math (Meeks/Carver/Beasley/ Durrence): 8th grade Math scholars will begin solving systems of equations. Algebra.
  • Algebra 1 (Meeks): Scholars will review and take an exam over Unit 3.
  • Carver's Tutorial: Tuesday's 3:35-4:30
  • Meeks's Tutorial: Wednesday's 3:35-4:30... Please contact Ms. Meeks if a different day or time is needed.
Note: All 8th Grade Math and Algebra 1 scholars will take the Spring Math MAP Assessment during the first week of March!!!
