Common Grading Practices

Steilacoom High will move to a completely unified standards-based grading system for the 2017-2018 school-year. 90% of a student's grade comes from Summative Assessments and the other 10% of the grade consists of Success Skills. Formative practice is not factored. Teachers choose anchor standards for courses and create common assessments in their PLC.

AP, Running Start & PCSC

Steilly students benefit from our close proximity to Pierce College. In the 2016-2017 school-year about 110 students took at least one course at PCC. We also have a large percentage of our students who enroll in AP classes. We offer 12 AP courses currently and are looking to add more next year. Students can also attend the Pierce County Skills Center for additional Career/Technical courses.

PLC Time

Teachers at SHS benefit from weekly structured PLC time. We use the DuFour model which seeks to assist teachers in their work using common assessments and four guiding questions: 1, What do we want our student to know? 2, How will we know if they have learned it? 3, What do we do if they don't learn it? 4, What do we do if they have learned it? Once a month we utilize this PLC time for building-directed professional learning.

Teacher-Directed PD

Our building leadership has also committed to the staff that we are willing to allow teachers to seek out their own professional development, provided that it aligns with our building school improvement plan.

Military Connections

Due to our close proximity to Joint Base Lewis-McChord (the 4th largest military base in the US) we have forged a great relationship with our military families.
