Confronting loneliness and isolation:

Pengarth Day Centre Penzance : Sharon Mitchell Manager of Pengarth

Did you know that loneliness and isolation can often lead to depression in elderly people? However brave we are it is really hard if we don’t see anyone day after day and are not in a position to be able to get out and about any more.

Here at the heart of West Cornwall's senior community for nearly 50 years, Pengarth day centre has offered friendship, fun and community to everyone in the local community. We provide a warm, caring day facility in which older people can sit, chat and enjoy regular activities and frequent special events, supported by professional care.

Our staff and volunteers arrange a calendar of activities and therapies planned throughout the year. Each month we have entertainment days and a Saturday lunch club. We also home deliver at least 900 freshly cooked, hot meals on our Meals on Wheels Service in the month…..again with a smile and conversation that helps people not to feel isolated

West Penwith has above average deprivation and rural isolation so we aim to provide a warm, safe environment with professional day care to ensure people live safely in the community. Through this service some people are able to come home sooner from hospital.

Many older people show such courage in continuing to live in their own homes and we aim to support and encourage independence and a dignified fulfilled older age.

Give thanks for those who support elderly people.

Give thanks too for the courage and determination shown by so many elderly people…..and all they contribute to our communities.
