Bikini Bottom Island

What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island. Be specific and explain your answers

I see lots of dangers as a person in a stranded island. Like contracting a illness from animals and germs, the unsuspected weather, not being able to catch food or getting enough water. Trying to make your own shelter and running out of supplies you need to survive. To be eaten by animals, and dehydration is also a risk.

Create a list of characters from the novel The Lord of the Flies and add details about them using textual evidence from the novel

Ralph~ fair (8), 12 years old (10), arrogant (didn't ask piggy for his name(11))

A fair 12 year old boy.

Piggy~ fat (7), short (7), has asthma (9)

Jack~ tall (20), thin (20), ugly (20)

Simon~ Always fainting (20), skinny (24), vivid little boy (24)

Sam and Eric~ twins (21), chunky (19), vital (19)

Roger~ furtive (22), inner intensity (22), secrecy (22)

pick the rule you find most important (from the ones we created) and explain why that rule, above all others is most important on this island:

Travel in 2 or more

Don't go out at night

Share resources

Clean up after yourself

Communicating effectively~I think communicating effectively is the biggest rule because I think to get along and figure things out, we need to talk and agree on things. If we don't talk things out and communicate we are all gonna end up fighting and killing each other or going against one another. So discussion and communication is I think the most important rule on our board.

"Communication is key"

Do your job

Do not kill each other

One of the themes of this novel is survival. Explain why the setting of this story adds to or contributes to the theme.

With the boys stranded on the island alone without any adults and the boys being not older than 13 it makes the boys have to survive by themselves and having to come up with strategies. The island contributes to the theme because on an island there are lots of resources but you have to learn how to use them, there are also predators that makes the boys have to learn how to fight them off.

Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. This is an example of foreshadowing. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

The "snake like monster" that some of the boys have seen at night and is mentioned more than once is a clue that something is in there, roaming and most likely looking for something to eat. The fact that it is so hot in the island makes it hard for the boys to do hard labor and build things. Also the "creepers" that the boys can get caught in while running and or tangled in.

Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies. emptation-meat

Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info.

From what we have heard from the story, there seems to be a lot of theories of that this "beast" looks like/ if there even is a beast. Percival has just mentioned to the boys that the beast lives in the ocean and only comes out at night. Then again Ralph and the boys also start to question if this "beast" is a ghost. Some of the boys believe they have seen this beast, and others believe that its all in there heads. We are not for sure if there is a beast or not, and if there is its actual appearance...

This is kinda what they pictured the beast looking like.

Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.

Some things the boys have given up doing is... using the bathroom where the rocks are along the island, and started going anywhere they need to go, which has now made the island dirty and even more unsanitary then it already is. They have started to drink straight out of the lake, instead of getting the water and putting it on coconut shells and they have been braking some of the rules such as going out at night, and not going out in pairs of two. All of this has caused the boys to start acting more "dirty" and there little hierarchy to start and fall apart.

An example of a unsanitary island and dirty place to survive.

Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.

Marriage is my ritual.

Wedding:

"Through in sickness and in health"

"I now pronounce you husband and wife"

"Do you '.......' take '......' to be your wife/husband?"

"Through in sickness and in health" is very helpful in this ritual. It is making sure that the other individual is sure there going to be there no matter the state that the other person is in. The other person has to commit to the other person. So that the priest and the other person knows that they promise to stay for as long as they live. Marriage is a very big commitment and if you think you are ready to be with someone for the rest of your life, then you also want to make sure they feel the same way. That is why they make you say so many promises and for some even in a church. Letting the other person know that you will be there forever and letting them hear it from your mouth makes them feel more relaxed and are sure of this commitment.

Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.

The boys now think they have seen the beast in there own eyes.

The effect of seeing the beast was a exhilarating moment, as for Jack he felt like it was a huge accomplishment! He felt very good about himself. When they came back to tell the other boys at the platform, he automatically said he wanted to kill it, but there was no way for them too. "The next thing is that we couldn't kill it". After they found the beast and had an assembly to establish what had happened, Jack eventually separated from the group and took everyone but Ralph and Piggy. Which then leads into what happened to Simon.

Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.

Simon has now died.

Simon was coming down from the mountain to explain to the other boys that the "beast" they saw was just a parachuter that got caught in the trees. The problem was that when he was coming down, the boys were having there "ritual" and they got very lost in reality and they turned savage. Then when SImon got to them, the boys surrounded him and stated to beat him, as if he was the beast. "It was crying out against the abominable noise, something about a body on the hill." (153). The next thing the book says is that all they saw was SImon's blood starting to stain the sand then the tide takes his body away...

In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.

DIfferent groups or cliques.

Groups bring people together. No matter the group, you always find people that like the same things as you. LIke sports, clubs, school ect... Sometimes it can be a negative thing because people like to judge you for things u may like. You might not get along with everyone from your "group" or u might just find it hard to fit in. It is a positive thing too though because you could make new friends and be able to relate to people that share same interests. Groups have there positive and negative aspects but in the end, you always find someone who like the same things as you.

“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?

Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.

To have rules and agree to me is more important then hunting and killing because in the rules that they had made, communication was more important to me than any other rule. WIth communicating they could agree on what to do to be rescued or other things they would need to survive. Hunting and killing is only gonna make the boys more savages and its not gonna set a goal to be rescued, yes they would be able to eat more meat but in the end being rescued off the island is more important. Like Ralph says ""so we can't have a signal fire... we're beaten.".

'"Well, we won't be painted," said Ralph, 'because we aren't savages"'

When the boys first crash in the island, they are "mature" and civilized. They start to makes rules and choose a leader to follow, I choose this picture because it is a representation of savages. The word savages means... (of an animal or force of nature) fierce, violent, and uncontrolled. As you read the book and get further into it, you will start to notice how the boys are changing not as much physically than mentally. They start to become wild and they brake all the rules, ignore the chief and brake there conch which was a symbol of law and order. They kill 3 boys, and separate each other into tribes for hunting and killing. This was not the plan for the boys when they first arrived, they turn wild. Not willing to come together and talk about what they needed to do to get rescued. This picture represents the change throughout the book. That is why I choose this picture.

Dear mrs.Lyda's students,

I'm here to tell you what I thought about this book "Lord of the flies". Personally I enjoyed this novel. It really makes you wonder about what these boys had to go through and how they had to survive with each other. Mrs,Lyda is such a good reader! I loved whenever she read the book because she truly puts emotion into it. I would have to say out of everyone and the the ways we got to read the book hearing her read to the class was my favorite. When mrs.Lyda fist brought up the idea of the blog, I didn't think I was going to like it, but after about 2 assignments I surprisingly enjoyed going on the chromebooks to get the blog done. In conclusion I very muched loved all the activities associated with this novel and I very much loved
