SPORTS BROADCASTING Camp dates: July 23- Aug.5, 2017

Love sports? Love broadcast journalism? You’ll love this 2-week hands-on sports broadcasting program at UMass Journalism.

Learn the basics of sports broadcasting in our new state-of-the-art broadcast studio with experienced UMass Journalism faculty as your teachers. You’ll learn about story idea generation, game preparation, interviewing, script writing, camera work, video/audio editing and on-air presentation. And you’ll cover actual sports stories in the Amherst area to gain experience in the field. You’ll learn how to use our cutting-edge cameras and equipment, too—and have a great time with new friends in the process.

GOALS:

By the end of the camp you will learn how to:
  • Develop story ideas;
  • Research;
  • Interview;
  • Anchor, live report and call highlights for a sportscast.

During these two weeks, you will take part in anchoring, live reporting, interviews, editing, writing and calling highlights for a sports show. You will learn the essentials of working behind the studio camera, basics of producing a sports show and how to speak the language of videographers, directors and producers.

You will be able to showcase your work in a sports broadcast with students filling the roles from camera operator, to producer, to reporter and anchor.

As with anything in journalism, you get what you put in. So be ready to hit the ground running….and above all – have fun!
