Picasso Chris Denham

Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga Spain on October 25th 1881. Picasso's mother had much faith in him saying, "if you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk you'll end up as the pope." He later said, "Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso." Picasso was taught art at a young age by his father and at 13 his skill passed his fathers. Picasso eventually went to the school of fine arts in Barcelona where his parents and him had moved to.

Picasso was not interested in traditional art as he felt that he kept seeing the same old styles that had been the normal for years. in 1907 Picasso painted one of his most famous works "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," this piece was of five prostitutes. Thee piece was the beginning of his cubist works and he was greatly criticized for his "ugly and disgusting" painting that "abolished perspective." Cubism is to show all possible perspectives of the artwork using geometric shapes.

Picasso's new idea was extremely controversial as some people believed it was revolutionary in the art world while others believed it was ugly and that he was "destroying beauty." Surrealism could be considered a product of cubism as his ideas made others discover new ways to portray different perspectives as well as develop new ideas for styles of art.

Later in Picasso's life he joined the communist party and was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize twice. He was known as an international celebrity in the middle of his life and was known as the most famous living painter. Picasso's love life was extremely fractured as he had many relationships with girlfriends, wives, and mistresses. Picasso had two wives and fathered children from one wife and two mistresses having a total of four children. Picasso’s love life led one mistress, one wife, one son, and one grandson to suicidal deaths.

Picasso's life was extremely interesting to research as I have extremely enjoyed learning about him. Picasso was/could be considered the founder or a great contributor to surrealism, post impressionism and modern art. Picasso could be considered the founder of modern art and is certainly the founder of cubism. His ideas helped sparked artistic revolutions and new ideas leading to a drastic change in the art world.
