Welcome to Sussex Catenians It’s better with frIends

The public image of the Catenian Association has evolved so much since it’s inception in 1908. Our Association continues to reflect the shared values of its membership of Catholic professional men, their wives and families.

‘SUSSEX CATENIANS’ is made up of the eleven Catenian Circles & Groups across East & West Sussex that together form ‘Province 18’ of the Catenian Association of Great Britain.

The eleven Circles & Groups that form ‘SUSSEX CATENIANS’

Making the outward profile of SUSSEX CATENIANS reflect the variety of backgrounds, ages, professions of the members (‘brothers’) whilst utilising all available media to do so keeps some of us busy....

Maintaining a vibrant and fun profile is important to us - as is ensuring our communities know we are very much part of them and active in our Church.

We reach out at every level and in all ways possible to our communities. We compete for attention in newsletters and on notice-boards... and of course on social media. We do it in print and online never forgetting the power of social media and recognising that today’s young Catholic person is tomorrow’s Catenian.

Social media gives us a powerful and lengthy reach...

As society evolves, so do ‘the Catenians’. We have embraced the changes in our world and in our Church for more than a century. Our faith and our deep seated fellowship sustains us. We are not a political body and neither are we fund-raisers although charity is very much at the heart of what we do. We are fun & family centred with Catenian husbands and wives and their families all part of a vibrant local, national and international social scene...

We regularly take a good hard look at what we do and how we do it. We remain dynamic and meaningful by staying current and adapted to the world in which we live

Our venues are mainly ‘People first, Disability friendly’ as are our procedures, printed materials, etc. Catenians care about each other and our environment ...

Being ‘Welcoming’ is in our nature... we are friendly people and it is even a stated requirement of our procedures... We call each other ‘brother’, our greetings are ‘fraternal’, ours is a ‘brotherhood’ - we share friendship, fellowship and faith.

...

Our ‘tag line’ in 2017 was ‘It’s better with friends’ - life still is, but our message in 2018 is ‘Friends with the right people’ - the right people in the Catenians are like us, Catholics with shared values, interested in the world and our community. People with family values and a variety of interests and whom we gladly call friends.

We embrace good causes in our communities, our churches and around the world. Catenians everywhere support charities and many actively work in these. Through our Presidents’ Charities, sports society charities and the efforts of countless Catenians, significant money and resources are provided to those that need our help.

We are all Catholics. Our faith is vital to us. We support Vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate and the religious life. We work within our parishes and dioceses. Collectively, we fund vocational initiatives. Through our bursaries we pay for helpers to work at Lourdes and other centres of pilgrimage. We are not a fund raising group but supporting our Church and the faith of our fellow Catholics is at the heart of who we are and what we do.

We were founded as a ‘men only’ group to support professional Catholic men within a social environment. Very much as the ‘Catholic Mothers’ did and do for women. Times have changed and now, whilst our meetings are restricted to our brotherhood, the other 90% of our activity is family and social with our Catenian wives at the very heart of everything.

As with all else, today’s young people are our future. We organise activities for young Catholics socially, or through local churches or schools. Some events are national or international. These may be in the form of competitions or even massive stadium events. We have an active Bursary Fund that helps defray costs or sometimes meets these entirely. Britain’s youngest Catenian is 18...

'SUSSEX CATENIANS' have working initiatives involving primary schools and parents, grandparents & teachers; similarly with senior schools - and with colleges and universities.

Sponsored university groups are 'reaching down' to support A'level GCSE students 'before, during and after' their entry into further education. We are now reaching out to alumni groups too.

In 2018 we began a number of iniatives reaching out to Catholics in our universities and colleges. Many of our members are graduate professionals yet most would say they heard about the Catenians only in the years after graduation. These days many Catholic schools participate in events or sponsorship created by Catenians ... so the younger and older people have been hearing our message about the Catenians loud and clear. Now it is time for the millennials to hear much more about us and so throughout 2018 we will be active in our colleges and universities ....

Friends with the right people....
We never forget our Catenian friends - in good times or bad we support each other - but when there is real need, we have our Benevolent Fund to help us. Young Catholic people can call upon the Bursary Fund to help them test themselves when aiding others...

We are an international Catholic brotherhood. We began in the NW of England way back in 1908 but we now have active Catenian Circles in many parts of the world. Some countries and even entire continents, have embraced us to the extent they have their own growing Associations each affiliated to ours in Britain.

It really is better with friends...
