Introducing our new team members:

This year the UTB team has continued to grow in numbers and expertise.

Welcome to Karla, Glen and Julia!

Karla Sanders is joining the NZ team to help with digital technologies and digital fluency. Karla has worked with schools in a digital leadership and facilitation role for years, and has a wealth of experience with online safety and anti-bullying through her work running Sticks'n Stones.

Glen is joining the Aussie team and has previously worked at Monash University in the IT department. Glen will be available to schools and businesses to help with their IT setups and will also be providing training to organisations on the Google Cloud Platform.

Julia Anderson has also joined the team as our marketing manager. Julia is a Social Studies teacher (Business Studies, Commerce and Geography) who branched out into the online marketing world and has worked with a wide variety of industries. We are looking forward to bringing her expertise back into the EDU world.

Coming Soon... Sphero RVR!!!!

Sometimes it is hard to find the perfect video which summarises new technologies and the future of work.

One of our favourite tools for teaching coding in schools is the Sphero SPRK+. You can imagine my excitement when Sphero announced a new product last week: the Sphero RVR. The RVR is a result of a partnership with the king of invention gear, Sparkfun.

The RVR is a departure from Sphero’s ‘ball’ format and will allow students to add extra electronics to the rugged platform as it runs of a Rasberry Pi. It is a very similar concept to the mBot Ranger but seems a lot sleeker and more compact.

The Sphero RVR has just launched on Kickstarter and is expected to be available in October 2019.

Tim tries out the up2 3d printer....

I was fortunate enough to be given an UP2 3D Printer and have been exploring new ways to use this technology.

I stumbled upon the Lithophane technique of printing reliefs which when held up to light create a glowing picture. This is an awesome way to use 3D printers to make something artistic rather than purely functional.

There are lots of great Lithophane, browser-based, converters. One of my favourites is this Image to Lithophane converter.

My next step is to programme a light to come on behind the Lithophane using the micro:bit.

The ‘Popup for Keep’ Chrome extension can make this a quick and simple task. Add it to your account and you’re away.

FROM THE ARCHIVES..... Think like bees when juggling change in schools - Change that leads to new learning opportunities and improved outcomes must utilise the human resource in schools, embrace technology that redefines learning and engages the wisdom and experience of others. If we were to think more like bees when doing the buzziness, we’d actually manage the change organically just like they do. - By Adrian Francis
