Tours of Central Station CASE STUDY: Network Rail and Bellahouston Academy - September 2016

In September 2016, S3 Pupils from Bellahouston Academy were given a tour of Glasgow Central Station by staff at Network Rail.

The aims of this activity was to give pupils an understanding of the operational aspects of a busy station and to enhance their knowledge of the history of the station.

Pupils are working with their teachers to create posters advertising the tours in different languages and are creating a 'Basic Phrases' booklet for staff at Network Rail to distribute when providing tours to visitors from various places around the world. This allows the young people to put their language skills into practice and provide them with an insight into how a qualification in languages can be put to use in a real-life working environment.

"The visit was fun, interesting, and educational. I found out about things I didn't know about the station. The tour guide was engaging and I would love to know more about the train station. Thank you to Network Rail for giving us the opportunity to visit."

Feedback from both the pupils and staff at Network Rail was very positive following this event and both the school and business were able to benefit from the day. Pupils' appreciation of the strength and value of communication in a different language within the World of Work was significantly complemented. Network Rail will benefit from enhanced communication with their customers thanks to the material being produced by Bellahouston Academy pupils.
