Uncovering unexplained wealth in Southeast-Asia Analysis of asset declaration systems in selected countries

8 March 2019. Verifying the content of asset declarations for uncovering hidden or inexplicable wealth can be extremely challenging and is one of the most pressing issues in the region.

Three years ago, Indonesia introduced an online system for collecting, managing and verifying income and asset declarations, and is now planning to use this e-system to automatically detect red flags, using risk criteria to identify potential conflicts of interests and unexplained wealth.

In several Southeast-Asian countries, these systems are still underutilized, and few convictions for false declarations or inexplicable wealth have been achieved so far.

Existing initiatives as well as legal and regulatory frameworks for asset declarations were analysed in a regional study in selected countries in Southeast-Asia (Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam). You can now access the findings online:
