The device, called Mobilift, is a combination of an electric wheelchair base and hydraulic patient lift that can help transport an individual from one location to another such as a wheelchair, bed or bathroom.
Reed Painter, a retired USU library sciences instructor and librarian of 33 years, is one of the first people to use Mobilift in his home in Providence, Utah.
Mr. Painter has suffered from the effects of muscular dystrophy since he was 15 years old.
Once strapped into the harness, the electric lift can hoist a patient a few inches above his or her chair or bed to facilitate transfer to a different location.
