Comparing Fractions with the butterfly method

Multiply the numerator of the first fraction and the denominator of the second fraction. Write the answer above the first fraction.

Do the same thing with the numerator of the second fraction and the denominator of the first fraction. Write the answer above the second fraction.

Compare the answers. The answer that is larger is the larger fraction.

2 x 7 = 14

5 x 4 =20

Since 14 is less than 20, 2/5 is less than 4/7.

4 x 10 = 40 and 6 x 3 = 18.

40 is larger than 18. So 4/6 is larger than 3/10.
