Derek Jeter BEGINNER to Greatness

Derek Jeter came into the league as a 20 year old shortstop. He went from a beginner to the greatest baseball player, and shortstop that we have ever seen. Derek Jeter was drafted by the New York Yankees in the year of 1992 out Kalamazoo Central High School. He played for the New York Yankees throughout his 20 year career, while playing in the American League. There is also the National League. There are 30 teams and they split the teams into 15 and put them in the American League and the National League.

When people learn about Derek Jeter, they usually ask the question “What accomplishments did Derek Jeter have throughout his career?” Well if you read a little further, you'll find out. Derek Jeter was in the MLB All-Star Game 14 times, and not a lot of players even get in once. Derek has also won the World series 5 times, and was the MVP (Most Valuable Player) once. Winning the World Series is a huge accomplishment because not every team gets to win it. When Derek was a rookie in 1996, he had a magnificent season, and then he was voted Rookie of the Year, which is a nice milestone as well.

Not to mention, Derek was a shortstop, and he got 5 Gold Glove Awards which means he was a best fielder at his position and was awarded for it. He also won 5 Silver Slugger Awards, and 2 Hank Aaron Awards. These both deal with power hitting such as home runs. They deal with the most home runs and extra base hits like doubles and triples by each position, and Derek has done that many of times to receive these awards. He has also received the Roberto Clemente Award once. The Roberto Clemente Award is given annually to the Major League Baseball (MLB) player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team", as voted on by baseball fans and members of the media.

He finished his career with 3,465 hits. This was all just hitting, but trust he's done some fielding displays that were amazing. There was the flip play when there was a ball hit down the line and the right fielder missed the cut off man and he ran from one side of the field to the other and flipped it to the catcher and got the out. No other shortstop has done something like that besides him. Then there was, “The Diving Catch”. This one was when a pop up was hit down the line and Derek made the catch and dove into the stands. Most people lean into the stands for a catch but this was a full lay out. He ended up with a bloody face but the catch was made.

Derek has also made some good quotes throughout his career. One of the quotes he said was, “There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do - and I believe that.” The second quote was “You gotta have fun. Regardless of how you look at it, we're playing a game. It's a business, it's our job, but I don't think you can do well unless you're having fun.”

Derek Jeter was a player with motivation and determination, and if we did what he did, our careers can be just as successful. Trust me.
