Pt. Chev Beach A photo essay by Rajeev

It was an overcast day, grey clouds filled the sky. I had signed up for a photowalk on sonyscene . I really did not want to go on this walk to be honest, just feeling too lazy on a Saturday. But I wanted to experience first hand what happens on walks such as these. And since it was hosted by Tom Ang, I forced myself to head out there. And thanks to this photowalk I have had an opportunity to rethink my approach to photography.

Be free...shoot jpeg...let the camera do some of the job! - Tom Ang

I decided to try the straight out of camera technique, using the inbuilt picture profiles on my Sony A7R. Here you can see the green filter profile, where only the green in the scene shows up, the rest being monochrome...It is completely different when you go totally old school.

A composition style that I wanted to try was the minimalistic style, like Michael Kenna. I love it when it is overcast as it is a great opportunity to shoot black and white images. Here is a series with a man and his dog.

With a flat grey sky, it was an opportunity to shoot silhouettes. Here is a branch of leaves hanging down that I over exposed and flipped to look like a bouquet of flowers.

What is art? What is Fine Art?

I have been grappling with this question this last week. Some photographers' work go for an exorbitant sum on the art market and I can't figure out why. I agree it is subjective. There is this argument that you buy the artist and not the art. So, it finally comes down to branding. Why a Mercedes costs more than your humble Toyota even though both take you from Point A to Point B. Go figure that out while I take a walk.

What is art? What is fine art?

This photowalk has got me thinking. Forced me to look at my art I create using my camera. In today's high pressure age of social media, amongst the battle for likes and followers, it is so easy to fall into a trap of creating images that fits the stereotype.

And then there is this age old cliche, "Do what you love, love what you do!". I think this photowalk made me realise that I need to hold on to this cliche and not fall into the trap of mindless vanity that is the social media world of today.

It is time to fall in love with the camera all over again. Overcome the creative block and try to find my own voice again, and again, and again.

Thanks for reading and watching! Love to hear from you on what you think of my photographs - good, bad or ugly. Till the next walk, keep clicking and make memories lovely people!
