Innovation call:

Live fitting of pipeline isolation valves

Currently, there is no readily available method to insert a Pipeline Isolation Valve (PIV) onto metallic mains under live conditions.

The challenge in this area is to install this equipment without interruption to customer supply in the following circumstances:

  • Where Installations require a method of isolation for use in an emergency, particularly prevalent for use on Multiple Occupancy Buildings (MOBs)
  • To avoid the replacement of steel Riser systems with polyethylene once disconnected from the parent supply

Sewer blockages and collapses

Water companies are seeking innovative methods to strengthen their pollution and sewer flooding reduction programmes. To overcome these challenges, all aspects of sewer blockages and collapses must be addressed, from prevention to more efficient detection and resolution.

Entries for the 2019 UK Energy Innovation Awards are now closed

After extending the deadline and receiving a flurry of last-minute entries, submissions for our 2019 UK Energy Innovation Awards are now closed.

We received a multitude of impressive entries and the competition for a place on this year’s shortlist is set to be fierce.

Introducing our judges

The judging process is now well underway and we are excited to announce our panel of judges for 2019.

From a diverse range of backgrounds, we have industry experts from Ofgem, IGEM and our energy network partners. Find out more about who will be judging our awards here.

Shortlisted entries will be announced on Friday 21 June 2019.

Utility Week Live 2019

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our network partners and all of the SMEs that took part in our collaborative stand at Utility Week Live 2019.

The event was a resounding success, with both the Electricity Zone and the Innovation Zone seeing a fantastic footfall and facilitating valuable interactions between key industry players and up and coming innovators.

Congratulations to the winners of our Big Energy Pitch: Robert Sunderland from Digital Engineering, Alistair Roberts from iPower, and Hogne Fevang from eSmart Systems. All of the presenters that took part were very impressive, and the competition was tough – we got to see a variety of ground-breaking new technologies from our innovation community and the judges were highly impressed with the quality of innovations presented.

Listening project recording sessions

After the Awards: Synaptec interview with Philip Orr

Synaptec won the EIC award for Best Offshore Renewables Innovation in 2017. As a very young company operating in a fairly conservative market, its team felt that entering the awards would be an important step forward in garnering credibility in its innovative technology.

After the Awards: Synthotech Ltd interview with Simon Langdale

Synthotech won the UK Energy Innovation Award for Best Innovation Contributing to Customer Quality & Reliability of Gas Supply in 2017. Synthotech’s close collaboration with the innovation team at its gas distribution customer, Northern Gas Networks, led to the creation of an innovative solution that met a real business need.
