Santhi sharing her thoughts on the importance of a good education

We have been exposing the children to camera's and video, Skype and other forms of electronic communications over the years. Having the children prepare and deliver presentations to us in person and via video is also allowing these forms of communication to become second nature to them. They will be ahead of the curve when it comes time for them to use these tools and skills out in the World. We are so proud of them!

Since day one we have placed education of the children in our care as a top priority

According to the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India "Literacy forms an important input in overall development of individuals enabling them to comprehend their social, political and cultural environment better and respond to it appropriately. Higher levels of education and literacy lead to a greater awareness and also contributes in improvement of economic and social conditions. It acts as a catalyst for social upliftment enhancing the returns on investment made in almost every aspect of development effort, be it population control, health, hygiene, environmental degradation control, employment of weaker sections of the society."

Our mission is the overall development of the children in our care next to food and shelter as basic necessities is their education.

According to UNESCO education is the most single important factor in breaking the poverty cycle. We believe that the children's most basic needs are to be met first which enables them to focus on their education. If a child is hungry, dirty, sleep deprived, worried about their families they will not be able to make their education a priority. We remove these obstacles from the children at The Bloom Center and they are able to thrive and are already changing the world they live in.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela

In announcing his Global Education First initiative, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reminded us that, “We cannot afford to waste the talents of a generation.” He related this to his own experience growing up in the Republic of Korea as it recovered from war. “People today often ask about my country’s transformation from poverty to prosperity. Without hesitation, I answer that education was the key.”

Our house father Prabhudas is a teacher at heart and by trade. He makes sure our children are given the chance of a good education.

2012 Children learning ... these children are still in our care.

Santhi, Mahima, Jyoshna and Raju are four of our original six children.

The children work hard at their studies day and night, each at different levels and having their own unique challenges to over come.

Some of the challenges our children face when they arrive at The Bloom Center in terms of education are:

  • When a child arrives they do not have knowledge of what education is or how to learn
  • The structured learning environment, teachers, other children, pencils, paper, books are very new to them.
  • Initially the children find it difficult to memorize the basics they learn.
  • The children are generally placed into a Telugu Medium school because having them trying to learn English while adapting to everything is not feasible. We do have some children in English Medium schools although the focus is to be able to read and write English but not to speak it as a second language. We are working with our children who are attending English Medium to speak more often in English. The above video's of Shanti and Mahima presenting in English is an example of what they has learned.
  • The children are placed into their class level by age and since most of our children are drastically behind in their learning they are placed with younger children and because they do not have the learning skills, underdevelopment is a challenge on many levels.

We currently have two newer children at ten years old learning their alphabets. Even with the support of local schools it becomes a great challenge to get them caught up to their age level. Extra help and support is needed for these children. We are committed to help all our children to give each a bright future. Each will go onto make a significant difference in their worlds of influence.

"I have a writing exam today so I am practicing" - Bella

Bella came to us mid 2016 from living a life on the streets of India. She was brought to us by a woman who knew her from seeing her daily. Bella did not have a name and she did not know her birth date which means a local doctor had to determine her age. Bella was estimated to be nine years old and based on this was placed in the first grade at a Telugu Medium school.

We have Deena to thank for our children being able to excel in their education.

Deena & Karuna

Deena is the cousin of our house mother Karuna and has been coming to help the children in the evenings and weekends for many years. Deena has made it possible for our children to learn and develop at their appropriate levels.

Deena is also in college studying computer programming.
