Jon & Joni McGinnis Serving the Lord in Costa Rica

Our mission is to IDENTIFY, TRAIN, RESOURCE & RELEASE pastors and church leaders throughout Costa Rica to fullfill their purpose in reaching every man, woman and child with the Gospel.

JON was raised in a Christian home. At the age of four he and his twin brother heard the gospel presented in a Sunday school class. Later that day they were talking about the class while sitting on the couch in their home in Springfield, Ohio. Their father walked in and asked what they were talking about. He then showed them again in the Bible what Christ did on the cross and both accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. A few years later they were baptized.

JONI was reared in a Christian home. Her dad was the associate pastor of the church in her town, so she had a basic understanding of the Bible from a very early age. She knew the "big 10" Bible stories and knew what Christ did for her on the cross for as long as she can remember. It wasn't until she was five, though, that she had to take that head knowledge and allow it to make a heart change. At an after-school Bible club hosted by Cedarville College, she realized her need for this Jesus, who she knew about, to be her personal Savior and Lord. After a story about Jesus healing a lame man, God softened her heart and realizing her own sin, she asked God to forgive her of those sins and recognized that Christ's death on the cross was for her. She prayed to receive Christ as her Savior on that day. She was later baptized at the age of nine.

Call to Ministry

Jon grew up knowing he was going to eventually end up in full-time ministry. In 1993 he joined the Army National Guard, serving for 6 years during his last year of high school and college. He and Joni were married in 1997. In 2000, they served in Columbus, Ohio as youth pastor at Memorial Baptist Church and then from 2004-2010 their family served in Portage, Michigan at Berean Baptist Church as Pastor of Christian Education. Sensing God’s direction in their life towards missions, in 2011 they left pastoral ministry and moved their family to Costa Rica to work under ABWE. They now work with pastors in both the capital city, San José, and throughout the countryside training pastors and church leaders.

Current Areas of Ministry

Jon and Joni’s ministry in Costa Rica centers around two main areas: hospitality and training. Given the Latino culture, it is not uncommon to have people stop by just to have a cup of coffee, hang out and talk about life and ministry. Their philosophy is that their home is a tool to be used for ministry. Whether that is frequent drop-ins, the church plant they are working with meeting for service or visitor from the States, a large portion of Joni’s ministry is preparing food, coffee and hosting.

Training has always been a part of their ministry. Jon began meeting with pastors and church leaders early on in their ministry in Costa Rica. Meeting once and sometimes twice a week to study theology, Jon has covered topics such as the book of Genesis, Amos, Acts and 1 & 2 Timothy. He has also worked through Systematic Theology.

In September 2016, Jon was contacted and told of a pastor near the Nicaraguan border that desired to have training available near him. Jon contacted him and set up a modular training time. In January 2017, this pastor along with several others studied Bibliology and Hermeneutics in a Tri-M modular style course. Classes are scheduled for every 3 months in that location. Since then, Jon has been contacted by another pastor in the Province of Guanacaste, and he is pursuing the option of holding classes there as well.
